The Heartbreak Chronicles

I stood at the door, staring like an idiot. Oliver was the last person I expected to see. Maybe he wanted an apology? My cheeks turned pink.

I shouldn’t have been so mean, the regretful side of me thought.

But then another thought ran through my mind, as pride took over. He played me like a fool. He should have told me who he was.

“Ah, hi,” he said interrupting the battle that was taking place inside my head. Reaching his arm over his shoulder, he scratched the back of his neck nervously.

I couldn’t tell if he was angry or not. There wasn’t a trace of that award-winning smile on his face.

Apologize to him! I screamed at myself. But I choked on the words as I opened my mouth. Something entirely different came out. “What do you want?”

“Um, okay…” Oliver said as his eyebrows knit together in a frown. “Do you have a twin sister or something?”

How the hell does he know about Cara? How does he even know I have a sister? “Sorry, what?” I asked confused.

“Well, this morning I met a girl at Starbucks. She was completely adorable, but she seems to be M.I.A…” he trailed off.

Oh, right. He wanted an explanation for the mood swing.

“You should have told me the truth,” I responded trying to defend myself, but it came out pathetic and barely a whisper.

“About what exactly?” he asked. Something about his expression made him look hurt, as if he wanted to say something more; I almost swooned. Who knew a guy could be so cute when he was upset? But I couldn’t apologize; that would be humiliating.

“Um I don’t know. How about who you are? Do you know how much of an idiot I felt like when I saw you sitting behind that table today?”

“You’re telling me that you really didn’t know who I was?” he asked and crossed his arms.

“No, I didn’t.”

Oliver rolled his eyes and shot me a ‘duh’ look. “Well, there’s your answer. That’s why I didn’t tell you. I could just be myself, you know?”

I watched him brush his hair to the side, before I remembered to answer. “Fine, whatever, I guess I understand. But now I know who you are and everything, so goodbye.” I started to shut the door.

“Hey wait!” Oliver said and stuck out his foot to stop me.

“Is that the food? Who’s at the door?” Drew called out. The bed squeaked as he got up to see what was going on.

“Hello,” Oliver said awkwardly as he stuck his head in the room to greet my brother.

“Hey,” Drew said slowly. He looked confused. “I know you.” After staring at Oliver for a second longer, it finally clicked. “You’re that guy from the band. Stella what are you doing? Let him in!”

Closing my eyes, I let another sigh of frustration hiss out from between my lips. Nothing positive was going to come out of this situation. When I released my grasp of the doorknob, Oliver stepped in beside me. As he did, his arm brushed against mine just like this morning. I sucked in a deep breath.

There was a moment of uncomfortable silence as everyone stared at each other. Finally my brother spoke up. “So no offense or anything, but what exactly are you doing here? Wrong room number or something?”

“No,” Oliver said. He glanced at me before continuing. “I came to talk to your… girlfriend?”
