I spent the morning getting everything ready to leave. It was still dark when I went into sean's room to check on him. He was still asleep. I scribbled a short note and leaned down to kiss his cheek before placing the note on the pillow beside his head.
"I'm sorry." I whispered. "I have to do this."
I took his car again, driving away and not looking back. Nathan called last night and told me he'd be around to check on me at eight. It was only half six. He was arranging a search party for cara. I would have felt touched if I didn't know he was only doing it to get at the person who took her. I'm determined to get to them first. Then I'll kill the son of a bitch who dared to steal my best friend away. I sped up on the motorway and pulled over when I got to the woods. I should have been far enough away from home to be safe from nathan and sean. I thought carefully. Would they be in the woods? Was this damien guy human or werewolf? Ugh! I should have checked with nathan or asked sean or something.
I got out of the car and began walking into the woods. I may as well check the woods since that tended to be where werewolves hid. It was just getting light but you could hardly tell under the immense canopy above me. I tripped on a root and was sent careering into a ditch. My arm caught in a thorn bush and I winced as the thorns created deep gouges in my flesh. I scrambled to my feet and cradled my arm, waiting for the pain to go away. Suddenly I heard a scream. A scream that I recognised. Without thinking I took off in that direction, forcing myself to keep running when I began to lose breath. The screaming got louder.
"Please! Stop!" Cara pleaded helplessly. She was pinned against a tree. Someone was pressed against her. He was biting her neck roughly.
"Cara!" I cried. She gasped.
The man whirled around. Cara's blood dripped from his mouth. Nope. He wasn't a werewolf.
"Shit!" I hissed. "No one told me you were a bloody vampire."
He grinned and prowled towards me.
"So you're kim." He rasped. His voice was uneven. His hair and clothes were a complete mess. I thought vampires were supposed to be attractive! Cara whimpered, covering the puncture marks on her neck. I backed up but soon found myself pressed up against a tree.
"Shit shit shit!" I cursed repeatedly. I snapped off one of the weaker branches and swiped at him. "Back off y-you monster!" I screamed. He straightened.
"Aren't you fiesty?" He chuckled. I stabbed the end of the branch towards him. Didn't wooden stakes kill vampires? It looked sharp enough. He backed away slightly, looking worried. Maybe I could use this to my advantage. I stabbed at him again and he stumbled back.
"Don't just stand there you stupid girl. Run!" I yelled at cara. She did as she was told, racing in the direction I'd come from. The vampire in front of me whimpered pathetically.
"Y-you wouldn't kill me." He mumbled. "Damien would get his revenge."
"Who is he and what does he want with me?" I demanded.
"Promise to let me live?"
"Fine. Just tell me." I ordered. He gulped and stood.
"I don't know why he wants you. He hired me to capture you but I seem to have caught your friend instead so he ordered me to dispose of her." He whimpered. "That's all I know."
He seemed earnest enough. I held the stick tightly.
"You didn't see me okay?" I growled. He nodded and ran away. I rolled my eyes and followed cara. She was leaning against the car, panting slightly and holding her throat. "Get in." I ordered her. "We can treat you safely at home."
The drive home was silent, apart from cara's desperate sobbing. I said nothing, too busy concentrating on getting her inside. I checked the clock on the dashboard. It was almost eight. Nathan would be at mine soon with the pack. I could just imagine his face when he saw cara safe. I pulled up outside the house and turned the engine off. The pack was already there. Sean's face flooded with releif when he saw me. He yanked the car door open and dragged me out.
"Don't you ever do that again!" He yelled, shaking me violently. "We've been going out of our minds!"
"Alright you can tell me off later. Cara's hurt." I protested. He dropped me and I slumped against the car, suddenly feeling weak. Sean lifted cara out of the passenger seat and carried her bridal style into the house. A few seconds later nathan stormed out and grabbed my by the collar.
