“Ready?” I asked her as I sat down on the chair beside the bed in the delivery room. While, Maycee’s mother stand across me…

Yeah, it was hard. Especially with all the mood swings and cravings, everything. Pero syempre, iniintindi ko na lang, alam ko naman na mas mahirap yung sitwasyon niya…

“9 months akong nagprepare noh?” she said, showing off her white pearls…

It was time.

The nurses went into a flurry of preparations in the delivery room and the doctor finally came.

“You two look really nervous. Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be fine. And in a few minutes, you’ll be parents and you’ll hold your very first angel, okay?”

Maycee nodded as she reached for my hand.

“Where should I go?” I asked the doctor.

“Where you are right now is perfectly fine”

“Oy nerd, wag mo ‘kong iiwanan, ah?”

“Of course not” I said as I smiled at her.

The doctor then putted on his gloves and mask as more nurses came in with surgical tools. They all look at ease. And me? The exact opposite.

The doctor then took a hold of Maycee’s legs and asked her to push. Maycee grimaced with the effort as she squeezed my hand. While the nurse checked at the baby’s heartbeat…

“Okay, good” he said, moving into a better position. “Now, relax for a minute. Catch your breath then push a little harder”

She nodded then began pushing again. “Good, keep going” the doctor said, focused.

Maycee kept on pushing… And I? Ignoring the pain of my hand…

“Relax. You’re doing fine” the doctor assured her.

Maycee caught her breath and once again, pushed. Her eyes were squeezed shut, her teeth clenched, her face flushed with effort.  I was still holding her hand, amazed on how fast things seem to be moving now.

“Ok, one last big push and we’re there…”

And then? My gaze was immediately drawn towards Maycee’s legs, towards the baby beginning to emerge. First her head, and then with a quick shift of the doctor’s hand, the shoulders slid free, followed by the rest of the body…

I was now a father. And I sit here in amazement, staring at the new life in front of me…

Covered in amniotic fluid and still attached to the umbilical cord, she was a slippery mass of gray, red, and brown… At first, she seemed gasping but then a nurse placed her on a table, a suction tube was inserted in her mouth and her throat was cleared. Only then she began to cry. The nurse then began to examine her. From my spot, I’m not sure if things are going fine or not. The world was still closing in…
