Chapter 3 - Jane's POV

Jane ran easily along the coast of Washington as she made her way towards Fork, doing her best to stay in the forests and uninhabited areas along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. As she ran, her mid drifted off to Volterra where her brother would most likely be eating dinner with the others. Jane wondered what Aro would do when he found out she had no intention of returning. Would he assume the Cullens had destroyed her? Would he care? Yes, Jane decided, Aro would care but only for the loss of his greatest weapon. Alec on the other hand, Jane thought, would care about her. That is, Jane thought as she clenched her fist, if he would notice her absence through his zombie like state. It wasn't his fault, Jane reminded herself, but she couldn't help feel a mixture of anger and sadness at the thought of her twin brother not noticing she was gone, or worse. Not caring.

The ocean breeze brought Jane's thoughts back to the forest ahead of her as the sweet smell of humans drifted to her and mixed with the salty air.

Stealthily, Jane neared the clearing where a large construction was in motion. Along with the loud machines there were hundreds of burly construction workers sweating in the rare sunny day.  Great, thought Jane to herself as she surveyed the area. This area was almost always concealed with cloud cover and the day she decides to run off, it had to be sunny.

With no possible route around the site without being seen, Jane weighed her options. The crashing of waves against rocks brought a smile to her face and Jane sprinted to her left where the cliffs gave way to sparkling water. Diving in, Jane swam northward along the rocky shoreline as she swam past Strawberry Bay and up towards Forks.

Forty-five minuets later, Jane wadded in the water on the edge of a sandy shore. Using her photographic memory, Jane thought back to the map she had glanced at in Gates, Oregon. She should be only a short run from Forks, Jane thought proudly as she carefully swam to shore.

Carefully taking off her black, dress like cloak, Jane set it to dry on a nearby rock as she undid her usual bun and redid it. Looking around, Jane tensed as an unpleasantly familiar scent washed over her. Dogs.

Resisting the urge to hiss out loud, Jane whipped her head around and sniffed cautiously for the watch dogs the Cullens lived near. Of course, Jane thought on edge, she would land on the territory of the werewolves. Finding only stale scents, Jane relaxed slightly and looked for the woods that would lead her to the Cullens' land.

Spotting the tree line only a short sprint away, Jane straightened her strapless, black dress that she wore under her cloak, thankful for the cloud cover or her exposed skin would be shining like a beacon  to the possibly nearby shifters. Distracted by fixing her cloak,Jane didn't notice the two figures laughing and heading down the beach until it was too late.

Staring at each other, Jane immediately recognized the young boy as a shifter, the wet dog smell rolling off him in revolting waves.  Glancing to his side, Jane saw a young child that could pass for around nine. A growl ripped through the defensive boy as soon as Jane looked at the girl, causing Jane's focus to flicker back to him and raise a curious eyebrow. A vibrating began in the boys pocket and he flipped out a phone, his eyes glued with hate on Jane as she watched him answer.

"Hello? Sam! Thank God, you won't believe what is standing feet away from me and Claire-bear," rushed the boy and Jane chuckled at the name 'claire-bear'. Ignoring the boy's death glare and snarl, Jane listened as he began to describe her to this 'Sam'.

"Um, blond hair, red eyes, black cloak, and a small frame for a leech, " rambled the mutt, recieving an irritated hiss from Jane. Even from her distance, Jane could see the eyes of the boy widen in panic as he pushed the girl behind him and talked quicker and lower.

"One of them? It's her?? Ok, ok, I'll wait for you guys before I move in," whispered the boy hastily, never once letting his gaze drop from Jane as she listened. Jane didn't want to see these 'others'  or wait for them to 'move in' so as soon as the words left his mouth, Jane sprinted towards the tree line.

Ignoring the yelling behind her, Jane ran towards the faint scent of vampires, vaguely aware of the thumping paws and heartbeats in pursuit. Pushing herself to her limit, Jane dashed into a clearing where a large, mansion like house stood. Empty.

Hissing, Jane spun around to come face to face with the large mutts. Although the line of growling wolves had stopped a little farther into the trees, Jane knew she had a problem.

The Cullens were out and she was alone with a pack of hate filled shifters. Great, Jane thought as she backed towards the house.
