Deception

By Janine Mimi

Prologue.

The school grounds were as silent as a graveyard on the dark cool evening with the slight sound of rain tapping on the windows. It seemed uncomfortably peaceful as if the trees swallowed up the surroundings of the school. A faint light could be seen flickering from the windows. Many of the students stare out into the solemn clouds as they listened to each trickle of warm dew hit the glass. The sound of the rain fall was a calming melody of slumber and rest. This very school in the mountains of Southern Italy, known to only the elite few, was named Elementare Academy.

Elementare Academy was unlike any other academy, though there were many like it in the world. It was a school built for Elementals, a rare race of humans with the ability to control the four elements. Their eye color told which element they could master. Those born with blue eyes could feel the rush of water. Those with hazel, the power to dance with the tempting fire. Those born with brown eyes could feel and control the life and rumble of the earth, and an Elemental with green eyes could sing with the winds. These four elements were the structure of Elemental society.

There were very few cases of other abilities visible through the eyes. So uncommon, none ever bothered accounting for them except through legends and tales vastly changed through time. Although many knew of the stories, the students and patrons of Elementare were urged by the Headmaster to never speak of them.

"Why linger in the past?" he would tell them. "The legends of the past are useless. No one believes in the Gods of Olympus anymore. It's all rubble."

He ordered that any books on the old legends be burned and never read at their school. And so the students watched as the fires swallowed up the tales of old, never to hear their stories again. But life moved on.

At birth, doctors tested to see if each child possessed any elemental gift. They did so when the baby was about a week old, checking their eye color to see if it was even possible for them to have any gifts. If it matched an element, they placed the child in front of a piece of that element; maybe water or a rock. If they do possess any elemental abilities, the object with react, confirming that they are in fact an Elemental. When they were old enough, they were enrolled in one of many prestigious Elemental academies around the world. Elementare and the reputation it carried was considered to be the most prestigious of them all.

Only the elite were invited to attend the academy in Italy. No normal human or outside Elementals, uninvited, dared to intrude unless they came prepared to face the strongest Elementals in the world. However, what most they didn't know was the secret of Elementare had escaped years ago.

They could still see her eyes burning fear into their deepest thoughts. They could never forget her. She was unlike anyone they had ever seen before. She was an Elemental of rare talent, a girl of double colored eyes, one that sang in green and another that swum in blue. With her eyes she could tame the arts of air and water. No one could ever fathom it was possible for two elements to come together, but they watched her as she weaved them together in harmony. A prophecy had once been told of the one born with the Clashing of the Elements, but many didn't believe. Legends and Tales of these rare Elementals were always thought to be drastically altered or false throughout the centuries. They were never held as realistic or truthful and consequentially all eyes turned to her when any legend of this nature was mentioned. But the young girl was unstable at heart and could not control herself or her elements. She found it to be more of a curse than a talent.
