“Lizzie, I love you!” He stood on tiptoes, his chin resting on her bent head. He felt tears coming to his own eyes. This was not what he wanted, Lizzie’s tears. Why couldn’t they be in Africa? Why couldn’t he take her back with him, Michael wondered?
By the Creek
(3 weeks later)
Lizzie didn’t know how to treat Michael now. She felt as if she were about to break down any minute. She needed to get away to think, and her thoughts immediately went to the bluff on Derrick’s land, the one above the creek. It was like a little meadow, full of wild flowers. It had been a few weeks since she had been there, and she wondered what might be growing now.
She went outside by herself to get Silver.
Silver had not slept well the previous night; It had been too long since anyone had come to take him out of his stable, and he felt restless. The groom had been busy with other duties, and had only stopped by to feed and water him, and take him out briefly so he could muck out the stables. When Lizzie came with the tack, he was more than grateful, he was antsy. Finally!
“Hello, Silver! Nice to see you today! We’re off to Derrick’s creek; I know you know the way for this trip already.” She put the tack on and led him out to the mounting block. He couldn’t wait to be on the road, trotting. He hoped she was up for a gallop today as well!
She led him to the mounting block, and was soon up. He stomped his feet impatiently, awaiting their departure.
For some reason, unbeknownst to her, Lizzie led Silver out to the plantation. Someday all this would be hers. The thought thrilled her, overwhelmed her, and made her feel guilty. Someday, she would own slaves, not just Michael, but all of them. What a great responsibility she would have.
She guided Silver past the slave cabins, to the fields bordered by forest. She cam close enough to see the red of Scarlett’s kerchief, and to notice the clothing on the field hands. The simple garments intrigued her. She liked the way they fit on a man. She liked these garments even better than what her father, and Derrick wore. Someday she would oversee this place, she would be Master here. She wondered if she would be any good at the job. What changes would she make for the slaves? The thought of being able to make changes, of having the power to change things made her happy, and made her sit higher in the saddle.
After a good 15-20 minute survey, she turned Silver in the direction of the road. Silver eagerly broke into a trot, the moment they headed away from the plantation and down the open road. Soon into their journey, Lizzie gave him the signal, and he was off at a full gallop. He knew the way, and there was nothing on the road to stop him or slow him down.
In record time, Lizzie made it to Derrick’s plantation. She was eager to get to the creek, and had already decided not to inform Derrick of her arrival. Silver would be fine until they could reach the creek.
“Lizzie! Lizzie!” She tried to make a smile come to her lips. Derrick had been in the front room, and noticed their arrival. He was already on the porch, and going to get a bucket of water for Silver from the tap nearby.
“Hi, Derrick.” So much for her time alone!
“It’s so good to see you, Lizzie! It’s been awhile.”
“Yes, I suppose it has,” Lizzie conceded. Her thoughts had been so wrapped up in Michael she had not even realized that it had been weeks since her last trip to Derrick’s, “I wanted to see the creek, Derrick. It would be so good to have some time alone with the water!”
