Chapter Nine: All in One Room

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." -Marilyn Monroe

I enter a room similar to the one Director Fury interrogated me in only this one is much nicer and welcoming. Director Fury is flipping through a file, I assume it's about me, as my mom and I walk in. Tony doesn't even look at us from where he is sitting. Tony's face is flushed, I'm guessing it's from all the yelling earlier. He looks quite livid. I take a seat furthest on the right and my mom sits in the middle. The last thing I want to do is to become physically in-between my parents for I already am metaphorically. Before the two of us can become settled in our seats, Director Fury gets down to business.

"I want to talk to you about Monica joining S.H.I.E.L.D.," Director Fury looks up from his file, "I've been reading through her profile and Monica is an obvious candidate. She meets all of the qualifications."

My mom goes to speak but Tony beats her to it, "Then recruit her. Why do we need to discuss this? I'm sure you have never done this to recruit any other agent."

"Because she is under eighteen and legally we have to have parents' consent," The director answers.

"Then why am I here?" Tony crosses his arms.

"I thought you knew..." Directory Fury shoots my mother a questioning look.

"No, I do. I mean I've never been a parent to her before so why do you need my consent now?" Tony scowls at Pepper.

 "Tony," Mom clenches her jaw.

"We need both the father and the mother to agree, unless they are unavailable," Nick states firmly. Tony sighs in annoyance and leans back in his chair. "Now before you jump make a decision, I want to tell you, mainly Pepper, about what will be happening if your daughter decides to join S.H.I.E.L.D., Monica will stay up here and be trained in hand-to-hand combat. She will be taught by our best trainer for any battle situation. The physical training course usually takes three months for amatures. Training is catered to the individual; if Monica excels it wouldn't be surprising if she is a level one agent by the beginning of June. She will be properly trained how to use her suit along with the proper techniques of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. As you, Monica, take on missions we will gradually ease you into the Avengers. I foresee that she will be a complete part in the Avengers Initiative by the end of the year."

"What exactly qualifies her again?" Tony asks in a rude tone.

"She cooperated when you took her in, IQ, no health problems, and her Iron Man suit and capabilities."

"And how do you know of her capabilities?"

"I don't," Director Fury cocks his head, "But I'd be more than happy to find out."

"So, you're just going to waste our time by training someone who you don't even know is physically capable to handle being part of the Avengers Initiative?"

"I'm sorry I have more faith in your daughter than you do," Fury replies coolly. I can see the fire burning in Tony's eyes as Director Fury continues, "Monica has already built an Iron Man suit and is able to fly it. She has her suit equipped with many weapons that will be of use to us. If she is able to build an Iron Man suit from scratch, I'm sure she knows something about technology and science which is always useful. With skills and an IQ like yours, Tony, but with a niceness and level-headness, like Pepper, I feel that I won't be wasting time on Monica.
