Varian hated the surge of thoughts and prickles of emotions that surged through his body as he sat in his regular place by the old tree. Human emotions were ugly things, like ugly little black shadows that slither beneath the skin, that buries its way into the bone. It unhinges the spine, leaving you a spineless piece of concave skin. In each panic breath, the shadows dig deeper, eating at your heart, and gnawing at your stomach.

He cringed, he was left a defenseless fool, with no motives to live. That glimmer of hope only soon died within the time that the shadows had that firm grasp on the only remaining light that resided within him, it dimmed it to a pale gray, until like a switch, the darkness swallowed him whole.

Slowly with a shaky hand Varian brought the sweet smoke to his lips, inhaling the spices of the clove before finally letting the smoke escape his mouth in a lazy fog. He'd been at this park, and every time he came, there was always something familiar to see. The smiling couple, oblivious of their surrounding, a two year old playing in the sand to busy laughing to have care of the evil that awaited her. With every  glance the deja vu always came fast, like a dream he watched the world play out before him like always.

He watched throughout the day, well into the night when there was not a soul lingering near him, and he was left within his thoughts. Varian rolled the cigarette between his fingers staring off into the shadows that seemed to claw at the last remaining light at the park.  The thought struck like a signal beat of his heart, he was sitting in the same spot he died, it was the checkpoint of his death and also the rebirth of his life. It was the past playing out before him that he had already lived before, but for some reason, he was able to see the unseeable to most. He was reliving the moments of his past life, that is what the deja vu was.  Moments of his past that lead up to his death, it was giving him a second chance to relive and make the choice to finish... the question that bugged him though was... what was at that end of the finish line.
