I knew he would still be in the house regardless of when I wanted to come back.

Outside it was like a random heat-wave had hit the country. As far as I knew no-one had been expecting it, but now it was here they were enjoying it like crazy. As I walked down the street I had never seen so many people out, walking their pets along, walking their kids around, families and couples going past on bike rides… I actually found a smile creep onto my face even though one of my best qualities is looking as emotionless as Mikey Way.

I wove my way through the human traffic on the streets, all the way to the park. I found myself a nice spot in the shade of an old oak tree and lounged on the ground under the green canvas, IPod playing Black Flag at full volume, thankful for the well-tinted sunglass I had ‘borrowed’ from Jake that managed to cut out the bright beams of light that every so often burst through the leaves. Even in this shade I could feel the blistering heat tickling my skin. I was stretched out on the warm, soft grass, hands behind my head. It felt like heaven. I closed my eyes and probably fell asleep.

My eyes reopened when I felt a gentle contact with my lips. My eyes opened to reveal George pulling away from the short kiss, smiling down at me. He looked like an angel in my heaven.

“Hey.” he said simply, a grin on his face. He lightly pulled my sunglasses off of my face and tucked them into his hair, holding back the natural side fringe that was threatening to grow out of his short cropped hair. I returned his smile, trying- and failing- not to feel like a foolish teenage girl.

“What’re you doing here, Gee?” I asked.

“I figured I’d let my skin see some daylight for a change.” he replied, chuckling.

“Me too- and yet we’re in the shade…”

“Well, we can’t be exposed to the light for too long; we might die…”

I laughed and he laughed also, and it felt strange to be at such peace after a childhood of constant stress and anger. Of course, all of that would return on Monday morning, but right at this moment life felt like bliss.

George shifted slightly so my head was propped up against his crossed legs and then he tilted his head back so his face came into contact with a beam of light and closed his eyes.

“Have you got any plans today?” I asked him.

“Nah, and I take it- apart from staying at Jake’s- you haven’t either? We could just stay here together… like, all day.” he said softly, stroking a piece of my fringe before tucking it behind my ear.

“Hmm, that sounds good…” I grinned up at him and he mirrored it.

I heard the sound of ice-cream truck music and instantly sat bolt upright, knowing my whole face was lit up like a child’s.

“Would you like me to buy you an ice-cream?” George asked once he had stopped laughing at my reaction.

“Yes please. I’ll pay you back.” I said, and he left me to go find the van.

I watched as he walked away to find the van, my eyes following his every step and movement, the little reach to check that his hair was still in place, the slight sashay to his hips as he moved. As he walked away I had a little time for his beautiful face and aura to stop clouding my brain. I had some time to think about the situation.

 Was George my boyfriend?

Everything about that sentence seemed so weird.

I had never had a boyfriend in my life before George. I had never even thought about having a boyfriend in my life before George.
