Taking a bite of my granola bar, I crumbled the wrapper up in hand, licking my lips hungrily. One of my best friends, Celeste, picked at her sandwich, scrunching up her nose. After momentarily shuffling through her belongings she turned to me and opened my own purse. Reaching up to my auburn hair, I pulled it into a low ponytail at the nape of my neck. I held my food between my teeth as I nod at something Celeste said.
Celeste grabbed my maroon colored purse from across the table, turning it upside down, the contents spilling onto the wooden table.
“What are you doing?” I laughed as she shuffled through all of my belongings. She crinkled her nose at some of my dirty gym socks.
“Looking for money,” she stated simply, unzipping my large wallet, removing a crisp ten dollar bill. I widened my eyes, but realized I owed her money anyway. The weekend before she had persuaded me into buying these beautiful tope colored heels. I was nearly seven dollars short, and she supplied that money in a heartbeat.
“Sure, knock yourself out.” The sarcasm was impossible to miss. Celeste rolled her eyes and pushed a lock of her blonde hair out of her eyes, giving me her pearly white smile.
“I just need to get a proper lunch.” Pressing her lips into a straight line, she walked towards a vending machine. Celeste O’Connor was one of those girls who always did things without asking for permission. She borrowed my clothes all of the time and had a horrible habit of not returning them to me. She also mooched off of people whenever she was given the chance. But, she was a very generous person as well. She was someone who would stop by any homeless person and hand them her water bottle. That’s the reason everyone loved her. She put others before herself.
I rolled my eyes and gave a silent laugh to myself. I began picking up my belongings which had been scattered over the table. Celeste always made fun of me since I carried around everything a girl could possibly need. I had a whole emergency kit, filled with tampons to makeup, to emergency granola bars, which were my addiction. As I was picking up a tube of lip gloss, Celeste gracefully came back to our table, holding a bottle of red vitamin water and a bag of plantains.
“That’s a proper lunch?” I questioned as she tore open the bag of chips. She rolled her green eyes and smiled, liking salt from her manicured nails.
“Shut up, Peyton,” she told me, reaching into the bag with two of her fingers. “It’s the last day of school, no need to be such a tight ass.” Celeste had broken most of her New Year’s resolutions. Which were among: dieting, losing her virginity, and to stop eating salty treats, which were her weakness.
“I was kidding,” I claimed, holding up my pocket mirror to check my reflection, and widening my eyes. I wiped eyeliner build up from under my eyes and batted my natural lashes.
Placing the mirror back into my bag, I watched as Celeste’s smile grew mischievously. I tilted my head to the side and pondered what this look was supposed to mean.
“What?” I sighed. I ran my fingers over my legs, which were extremely smooth since I had waxed the night before. Personally, I would normally go with shaving, but my sister, Mallory, bought a self-waxing kit. She hadn’t liked it very much so she gave it to me. It worked absolute wonders.
“What’s this?” she giggled, holding up a small package in front of me. The silver square package glinted against the sun’s violent rays. I squinted my eyes to get a better glance at what Celeste was showing me.
“Uh,” I began, trying to find an excuse.
“A condom?” Celeste said playfully, waving it around in my face. “Peyton, why in the world do you need this?” She raised her perfectly straight eyebrows. I pulled at my sleeves and shrugged sheepishly.
“To have sex,” I snapped, yanking it out of her hands. “Obviously.”
Celeste continued to look at me with her giant cow eyes, as she leaned onto the palm of her hand. “You and Josh finally going to do the nasty?” she asked, running a hand through her short hair. I rolled my eyes and giggled. Celeste always came up with weird sayings for the most taboo yet common subjects.
