Chester and Elliot White stood in front of Valentina as the dark clouds outside faded and the sunlight seeped through the dusty open windows. Chester growled when the sun hit his face, breaking the shunned silence. Valentina’s eyes twinkled as fat drops of tears escaped them, she ran towards Elliot with an exaggerated sob. Elliot pushed her back and sat on the sofa. “You’re as dramatic as ever,” he remarked. Valentina laughed half heartedly, brushing her fake tears away with her hand. Chester laughed and pounced on the sofa in front of Elliot.

“You two sit tight, I’ll go make some tea,” Valentina said.

“Not like we’re going anywhere,” Chester drawled.

“Quiet you!” Elliot looked at the window, it was a clear day out, and it was serene, calm. But even the picture perfects scenery could not stop the wrinkles lining together on his forehead and the thoughts of Alice rising up in his mind. He could hear the water running and the cacophonic sounds of the kettle overheating.

“Why so dull Mr. White?” Chester asked rolling on his back, stretching.

“No reason Cat,” he answered back.

“Actually the name is now Chester, Alice named me,” Chester watched Elliot’s face change to a sudden vulnerable state at the name of Alice. The Cat grinned and scratched its stomach. “Are you sure you really see her as a little sister?” the outburst almost gave Elliot a heart attack. The kettle was still overheating. Elliot, perplexed looked at Chester, his throat dry.

“Would it be wrong if I say I don’t,” he replied cautiously. Chester grinned once more at the obvious answer which was stated by the pragmatic man who stood in front of him with a confident posture. Valentina appeared with a glass of tea in the slightly chipped cup that was addressed with a careful force towards Elliot’s grasp.

“Drink while it’s hot brother,” she said smiling, easily picking up Chester and tossing him to another sofa as he growled. Elliot watched as the hot vapor disappeared into the air and didn’t wince when the strong scent of jasmine and mint leaves entered his nose. Valentina clapped her hands and laughed almost hysterically. “I am Valentina Nightray, keeper of the Abyss, why on Earth are you two so glum about? I am just reunited with my brother after all these years and Chester,” she yelled, “You have a name!” Chester growled again lightly enjoying the fact that everyone acknowledges his existence by calling him Chester. “I dare say this deserves a party not a cheap cup of tea!” she pointed towards the cup of tea on the table. Elliot looked at Chester then at his sister again.

“Has she always been like this or is this just a new phase she’s going through?” he asked the cat. Chester laughed.

“What do you want to do to celebrate this happy little get-together Valentina dear?” the Cat asked. She smirked.

“I’ve got a bottle of wine and scones, why not take the night out and treat poor little Elliot here a drink for losing the one he cares most about,” she said ever-so-subtly. Elliot scoffed. Chester let his obnoxious laughs echo through the night and Valentina joined him. They seem to be drunk before the night even began, Elliot thought. The three childhood friends walked out as the cup of tea lay untouched and the kettle was overheating so much it burst in the kitchen leaving a pile of hot water on the floor.
