Respectfully Rose

Chapter Five

~~

Isaac pulled away from Rose’s hug as memories of Lorraine washed over him, he was brought back to that time and place forgetting about the present as it happened.

“Will you be my wife?” Isaac had proposed with a somewhat simple ring, he remembered looking deep into Lorraine’s pale eyes hoping that she wouldn’t say “No” and laugh in his face.
Lorraine had remained quiet for some time before she finally nodded “Yes, I will.” She had said before she hugged him and when she pulled away and accepted the ring he could have sworn he saw love shine in her eyes. Love for him and only him.

“Isaac?” Rose’s sweet voice brought him back from his thoughts, everything between himself and Lorraine had been a lie. She never loved him- how could you leave someone you love at the altar, and expect your sister to clean up your mess?

It hit him hard and an ache developed in his chest one that almost felt as though it could kill him. Suddenly he needed a break from reality.

“I’m sorry Rose, I’ve got to go.”

“Where?” she asked clearly confused “Your parents are expecting us at seven…”

“I have something I need to do. Go without me.” He said.

“I don’t understand…”

“I’ll meet you at home later. Purchase the tickets and anything else you might need for the journey I’ve got an account at the store and money in the bank.” With that he turned on his heel and left, he knew where the closest saloon was and he planned on drinking until he forgot what Lorraine looked like, and how she had broken his heart.

Rose watched as Isaac practically ran from her mother’s garden. She wondered if it was something she had done. She sighed and made her way back to her mother and pushed thoughts of Isaac from her mind as she enjoyed a day with her mother.

Once seven rolled around she got one of her family carriages to take her to the Wade’s house. She was not looking forward to meeting her new family without Isaac; God knows where he wondered off too. But she took some comfort in the fact that Ginny and Thomas would be there.

The carriage ride was long and Rose was left with her thoughts, there was so much to be done before she went to England. In all honesty she was surprised that Isaac had agreed to accompany her to England, perhaps he needed to get away too, forget about all the heartbreak that had happened in Colorado.

The carriage stopped and Simon was at the door within seconds to help her from the carriage.

“I’ve got orders to stay until you’re finished and then to take you home.” Simon told her as she took his hand to climb down from the carriage. She nodded; she knew her mother wouldn’t take “No” for an answer on this.

“Join me for dinner Simon?” She asked.

“I’m not sure that’s such a good idea…”

“Don’t be nonsensical” Rose replied “I won’t have someone waiting outside while I’m indoors enjoying a warm meal, now come.”

Rose normally didn’t boss the help but she knew if she spoke to Simon like her mother then he’d listen. Besides she didn’t want to go in to the Wade’s house alone. She got to the door and knocked loudly, conversations and laughter could be heard from within which only made her all the more nervous. She was shyer than her family and completely uncomfortable with such a large group of people that she didn’t know.
