Being a Slave

This was inspired by a lecture I attended by Hamza Tzortzis. (For those who have seen his debates and lectures, I know right! How lucky am I?! I saw him in real!) He said something and it just blew me away. It's been stuck in my head ever since. He said we're a slave. To one thing or another. We are slaves to something. But we can choose what we are slaves too. This was my inspiration for this poetry.

To some, this may sound extreme. No offence to anyone intended.

We must admit we’re slaves

We’re raised in little caves

We have no control or say

In our family, life or even DNA

Yet we roam this world like we’ll last forever

Denying the truth thinking we’re so clever

We say we’re living so free

And in pointless things we feel glee

Like the media, celebrities and fashion

We make these things our passion

These things we choose to control us

They’re the center of the topics we discuss

We imitate and try to please

Things that are like a disease

So orientated around looking good

Or being immoral and claiming we’re misunderstood

We’re delusional

Our lives are controlled by one thing or another

We have the power to choose or rather

We must choose what we follow

But most of these things will leave us hollow

However, there is hope for us if we find it

And when we do and we submit

Life will be given purpose and meaning

Our hearts, we will be cleaning

Because we’ll find Allah is our Lord

Even if by the rest of the world we are ignored

He loves us and will give us relief

When we pass His test of grief

And we will have everlasting delight

When we leave this world filled with fright

The day will come of resurrection

We won’t be saved by One Direction

Or anything that we devote ourselves to

On that day we will see what is true

We’ll see that Allah is the one

To whom we should now run

While we still have time

For our reward will be sublime
