Happy Reading - Vommet
Max couldn't bear to see her buried beneath the cold, hard ground, so he said his final goodbyes to her in the back of the coffin carrier and headed on home, unaware of the black Mercedes Benz following him.
Max Athol, silently walked accross the hot pavement thinking of how he could continue to live life without Lydia. He was also thinking about the note left on the kitchen table, he didn't want the police to be involved, so he had hidden it when they had come to conduct the investigation.
While Max thought about these things, he was unaware of the two men in black that had gotten out of the black Mercedes Benz. They had been following him for the last hundred metres or so and were trying no to look too suspicious and hiding when ever they thought their cover might be blown by some anonymous citizen.
Finally, Max came to the front door of his house. He was trying to remember were had left his keys, for he felt sure that he had put them back underneath the purple pot plant that Ophelia, his daugher, had painted for him many a year ago. That memory felt so distant from him now. He had not seen her since the incident. The day that everything changed. Since the day that he lost all three of his children.
"Daddy, daddy look what I made you!" the sound of her footsteps echoing through the hallway made Max smile " What is it my dear, not another one of the egg carton telephones is it, my darling. I think that I already have that many phones that I could hold the world record of the most handmade phones in the whole entire universe...". Max smiled again, her cross little face made him laugh, she was the most adorable thing in the world. " Don't be silly daddy, 'member Ma said that if I made one more out of her egg cartons she would turn me into an egg. I don't want that to happen" Max gazed upon the seriousness of his daughters face and replied "But I'm sure you would have made a wonderful egg. You would have tasted very sweet, now what did you say you made me?" ."You know how you keep you keys underneath the mat, well, everyone at school says that they keep their keys under their mat too, so I made you a special pot plant for you to put your keys in. I painted it purple because it's my favourite colour and I planted a Camellia seed because it rhymes with my name and you'll think about me all the time and..."
Max came back to his senses just in time to realise he was not alone. The purple pot smashed to the ground and sent dirt flying everywhere. "What the...?" Max didn't finish the sentence. A sharp pain to the side of his head, sent him flying across the balcony and once again into the void of darkness.
The room was black when Max awoke, still disorientated from his encounter with the men in black. The pain in his head throbbed vigorously, making Max aware of the pain he was in. He put his hand up to the pain to realise that it was all sticky. "Blood", he thought allowed. "What?" came a reply from behind him.
Max jumped, he had thought he was alone in the darkness. "Who's there?" Max questioned the darkness, "He's awake" came the reply, obviously not directed at him. A new voice, dry and husky, entered the conversation "Send him in."
Max still unaware of what was going on, was pushed back onto the ground and was pulled by his leg, causing pebbles and rocks to be caught in his back making Max cry out in pain. "Shutup you, if you want to get out of here alive, you better do what we say and not talk." Max let out a small whimper to let them know he had understood.
A door was suddenly revealed to Max, on the other side it was black also, but the sudden change in temperature made Max feel light-headed, he just wanted to leave, even if leaving meant being with his wife Lydia.
"You are Max Barnabas Athol, am I correct?" Max was shocked when he heard the voice, it had some familiarity, almost as if it was... "No, it can't be" Max thought allowed. "What did you say?" came the voice in the harsher tone. "I said, I mean, yes I am Max Athol, and I want to know where I am and who you are and ..." , "Silence," roared the voice " all in good time Max, all in good time"
