A year has passed since the love of my life went missing. Her name was Lorraine. Nobody knew where she went; even her family and friends, do not know a single thing of her whereabouts. She just disappeared in the thin air, without any trace.

Since then, I wake up from a nightmare in the middle of the night, sweat trickling down my body as I catch my breath as if it was my last. My heart is pounding in my chest with adrenaline rushing through my body.

In my dream, I see her, and flashes of hazy, but familiar, objects and places. I see a figure, and it advances towards Lorraine.  At first, I thought that the creature was an animal, but it formed a human body.

I can’t quite make out his face, but I am definitely sure that I know the mysterious man. Lorraine is running away and crying, yelling for help, but she stumbled down and she could not get up. Then, she calls for my name.

I want to run after her, but my feet are glued to the ground. I want to scream and shout to let her know that I am with her, that I am there to help her. I uttered her name, but no voice would come out of my mouth. Then she turns around, and I see blood running down her beautiful face. That is the moment when I wake up.

The nightmares always end up in that exact scenario. Now, I couldn’t go back to sleep, in the fear that I might see her ghastly face again. Just trying to recall the dream sends chills down through my spine.

Then, I look at our pictures, the only memories that I have with her. We were so happy back then. In one of the pictures, I see the necklace that I gave her as a gift for our anniversary, a heart shaped locket. Inside are our pictures, side by side, when we were a child. We grew up together. She is my life. She is my love.

I weep as I stared at the image. This picture was the last one that we took together before she vanished.

We were together at the night of her disappearance. To me, she seemed very odd. Something is not right.  A figure of a man emerged from a dark corner, and I heard a loud crack. A heavy blow with a rock was thrown in my skull.

Next thing I know, I am laying on the ground as my head pounds with pain. I touched my forehead as I felt liquid oozing from it. I looked at my hand and there was blood everywhere. I can hear the faint screams of the man and Lorraine. I can recognize the voice of the man. It was my best friend Dave.

They were in an intense argument. I can hear their conversation and it made me feel uneasy. They were talking about me. I listened and I found out that they had a relationship, and that she is bearing his child.

I was so furious at both of them but I simply cannot get up because of the pain. I lay there for a while, bearing the searing pain in my head.

“I warned you that something bad would happen if you do not go with me!” Dave said, grasping one of his forearms very tight, “I love you and I don’t want to lose you to him!”

Lorraine replied, “I would not go with you! And what we did was a mistake. You took advantage of me that night. I love him and I want to spend the rest of my life with him and only him.”

“If I cannot have you, he might as well not have to.”Dave told her with a grim look on his face.

With his one hand clinching on the rock, and the other holding one of her arms, he proceeded to lunge the rock into her head. She fell down quickly, and she wailed in pain.

I summoned all my strength to get up on my feet and defend her. As he was about to strike her with another blow that would have been fatal, I managed to get up and stop him.

We struggled for a little bit, and the object fell out of his hand. I threw a punch at his face and he fell on the ground as his jaws made contact with my clenched fist. I immediately swept the rock with my hand and smacked his head with it repeatedly, hard and fast, until his soul left his body.

I allowed myself to settle for a moment as I sat there, staring at his lifeless body. I feel very dizzy and I can now feel pain from my wound that I endured to stand up and fight.

Then, I directed my attention at the girl that I loved so much, the girl who had a relationship with my best fiend. I felt frustration as a million questions ran through my mind. I got up and hobbled to where she is.

I can tell that she is still alive because her chest is heaving. I looked at her face, her beautiful face that I loved so much, now distorted from the heavy blow. Tears rolled down on my cheeks. It was then and there that I lost my mind.

The sun is already rising as it all ended, as I savor the warmth of the sunlight against my skin. I promised to forget everything that happened.

A week after the incident, police investigated the disappearance of my best friend Dave. I simply made up a story about my whereabouts, and the head injury, to make me look like an innocent. Eventually, they gave up.

What happened to the body?

Well, I dug up a grave in the basement of my house, which is secluded. I buried Dave’s corpse, along with the truth of the horrendous event.

Since then, the nightmares haunt me every night, the ground that was showered with blood, the darkness, and the pain.

But, do you know what I will never forget?

Lorraine’s cries as I buried her alive, together with Dave’s body.
