Chapter Thirty-Four: Like the ceiling can’t hold us

~Eliza’s POV~

Michelle was stirring in her iced coffee (which she wasn’t going to drink anyway) while we were sitting in at a coffee bar in the centre of Seattle. “So,” she started. “You send me a hysterical letter and now it turns out that you don’t need me anymore.” “Pretty much, yeah.” I joked. “But I still like you.”

“That must mean that you can look me straight in the eye and tell me you don’t care about Mr Whitlock anymore,” she said, obviously testing me. “No I can’t. Apart from you, he’s probably my best friend.” “Sure,” Michelle said. “Whatever.” I sent her a quasi-mad look. “Thanks for the faith.”

“You deserve it. So, you’re babysitter of your brother’s ex now? No offence, but she looks like she needs one.” “I don’t know what I’m doing actually,” I stated, stirring my drink. “I really don’t.” “Well, can’t you just come back to New York with me? Please?! I could get you a bracelet at Tiffany’s.”

I smiled. “Thanks, but I can’t. I feel … responsible, or something along those lines.” Michelle raised her eyebrows. “Eliza Sophia Masen, responsible? What happened to you. Life of the party, dance ‘till the sun goes down and all. More like me. You make me feel immature.”

“Says the girl who survived the storming of the bastille.” “That’s so not the point. By the way, you’ll never guess who I saw two weeks ago.” “That could be plenty of people, got no idea.”

“That was a rhetorical question,” Michelle sighed. “Anyway, it was Laurent. He told me you and him made a deal…” I bit my lip and turned my eyes down. “Please tell me that isn’t true Eliza.” “It is.”

She sighed in annoyance. “If we weren’t in a public place, I’d throw you  through the wall. Are you out of your mind?!” Michelle hissed. “Mich..” “It’s Laurent! Do you seriously want to be told how this can possibly ruin your life? O, wait, you already know. ‘Cause it happened already. And I might not be around to save your ass this time, did that occur to you?”

“Michelle, he’s working with Victoria. She’s the one I should be watching out for.” Michelle rolled her eyes. “Victoria? What could you possibly have done to offend her?” “Kill James.”

Michelle leaned forward and grabbed my hands. “If she has ever loved him, I wouldn’t believe it. She’s playing games, she always has. There was a time we did too. Don’t play all saint like just because you met the Cullens.”

I blinked my eyes. “I’m still me, that’ll never change. I thought you knew that.” “The Eliza I know is a girl who minds her own business, runs when she has to and surely doesn’t sits around and wait for something exciting to happen in this hellhole called Forks.” I let out a indignant sigh.

“My priorities have shifted.” “Your priorities ? So that mouse is your priority now? You don’t owe her anything.” “I saw this coming. I should’ve stopped Edward from leaving Forks.” “Yeah, but you tried. You can’t blame yourself for your brother’s mistake.” “I don’t, but I pity her. The love of her life left her like that. Sure, she could have reacted better to it, but still.”

“So, you’re a pity-taker now?” I shook my hands loose from hers. “Victoria is after her, and she’ll kill her. You can say whatever you want, but no one deserves that.” “So, you made a deal with Laurent,” Michelle said, her French accent showing up when pronouncing the name.
