"I can't believe you did this, Dani," mom says as she pours her coffee on a weird looking cup. "Why would you sneak out in the night? Who told you to do this?"

I just stare at mom in silence. I can't tell her that Rachel made me do it, she might hate her. She can't hate her future daughter-in-law.

"I didn't raise you like this. You have never lied to me before."

"Um. Who told you about this, mom?" I ask in wonder.

"Your grandma."

"What?!" I say as I stand up from my seat in the counter. "Did you bribe her with diet coke?"

"No!" mom raises her hands, "Jeez, Dani, your grandma is diabetic, she can't have such things."

I sit back on my seat and look down, "I'm sorry, mom, it won't happen again."

"It's okay," mom says in disappointment, "but, you're grounded... for as long as I please. I hope you know what that means. You were never grounded before. It means school then home."

"Yeah," I reply in dismay. "I'm sorry, mom."

"Also, you're not allowed to have friends in the house. If I find out that you're bringing friends in here, I don't know if I can trust you again, Dani. I'm very disappointed in you," she adds, turning around and bringing her cup.

Not a problem, I don't even have friends.

"Mom," I say then she stops to listen to me, "my shower is broken, can dad fix it?"

"Just go shower somewhere else in this house. Try that bathroom near your grandma's room," she replies. "Now, go to your room... and oh," an idea pops into her head, "no, phone, no internet, and no TV."

My mouth falls open as mom struts out of the kitchen. I can't believe this, I have Spanish homework, I kind of need Google Translate at the moment.

Worrying about my homework, I prop my elbow on the counter, thinking of ways to answer it. I think and think for minutes and finally I decided to go to my room. I still may have that Spanish-self-taught book grandma gave me 11 years ago.

Watching the old grandfather clock near the stairs, the time says 9:45 in the evening. I climb the stairs and finally arrive at my room. Mom already took my phone as well as the internet and TV cables.

As I sit on the edge of my bed, I hear whispering voices from outside my window. I stand up and peer outside. As I gaze around, I see Melissa standing below me. "Hi," she whispers and beams hopefully.

I raise an eyebrow in surprise, "What are you doing here?" I whisper back while shrugging and raising my hands.

Melissa frowns and rolls her eyes. She peers around and notice a ladder by the end of the house propped against the roof. That was the ladder used when I sneaked out. Melissa signals me to wait, she walks towards the ladder and starts climbing it.

What the---

Why is she bringing a bag?

"Melissa!" I mutter in concern. "You might fall! Oh, my god, you're crazy!"

She eventually reaches the roof and tiptoes carefully towards my room. I'm just so thankful that this house is designed like this. Sometimes, I get to go outside my window and stargaze. At times, I would sleep on the roof and no one would even know.

"Tadaa!!!" Melissa says cheerfully as she enters through my window.

"What are you doing here?" I ask, wanting her to leave actually.
