Prologue
--Elspeth--
His smile was contagious as he looked down at me with an affection that I couldn't even begin to describe. My heart stuttered in my chest as he leaned towards me and planted a short and sweet kiss on my lips. Both of our eyes were closed with our arms wrapped around one another in a tight embrace. And when we pulled away I looked into those milky brown eyes and wondered if I'd ever get to see him again.
"I love you Arden," he whispered while his warm breath fanned across my flushed face.
"I love you too Clay," my voice trailed off.
I awoke with a start and searched the area to find Riven with his arms wrapped around me. I must have fallen asleep during the movie.
"Feeling a little tired Eve?" Riven asked, as his lips lightly pressed against my temple.
"Yep, that's what I'm feeling." I glumly replied yet I couldn't help but remember the way the lips of the milky brown-eyed Clay felt on mine as we had our happily ever ending in that stupid dream of mine.
God, when is this ever going to end? I couldn't handle anymore of this torture.
It was now getting towards the middle of August, which meant that school was about to start soon. Riki, Riven, and I would be attending the same school along with Clay, Kristoff, and Osias. And whenever I thought of being in the same room as Clay, my heart would steadily pound in my chest, and my mind would fill with images of our shared kisses.
I just couldn't do it.
I started when Riven had suddenly jumped from his seat on the couch. "I have to go," he said as he hurried to get his things from around the apartment. His shoes, his jacket, his keys and wallet.
"Is something wrong?" I asked as I followed his movements with my eyes, I ogled the stretch of each muscle and the ever-changing emotions that passed flitted across his handsome face.
He nodded and then rushed towards the door and I got up to follow him out. I smiled when he bent down to give me a quick kiss. "I have to pick up my little brother, he just had some watermelon while at a friend's house."
I had met his little brother only once before when me Riven and I had gone out for ice cream with the little guy. He was a cute little thing, yet he was the complete opposite of Riven, causing as much destruction in his wake as possible.
"Is he allergic to it?" I asked him as he opened the door and started to walk out.
He shook his head and blond curls fell across his tan forehead, "He just really hates watermelon and from the text message I got, it seems like he's on the border of throwing up," he explained. He was about to leave but then gave me a bright smile and a kiss on the forehead, "I'll see you soon, love you."
I gave him a smile back and watched as he turned to leave the apartment in hope that he would get to his little brother in time.
"Mmm," came a distant sound.
My body froze and my eyes began to unwillingly scan the area around me. I jumped when I realized that I was not in the hallway alone.
There was Clay leaning on his own apartment door with his head in his hands and the frantic pounding of my heart instantly began and was so severe to the point that I could hear every distinct beat. I could barely breathe through the sudden haze that covered my mind as clips of my dreams came to the forefront of my thoughts.
My head snapped up in alarm when I heard Clay's dark chuckle, "You didn't tell him that you loved him back."
"What?" I choked and became all the more stunned from the sound of his voice.
His hands fell from his face to his sides and once his eyes locked with mine I was lost in those piercing chocolate brown eyes that made my body shudder with longing.
I broke our gaze, unable to stand this any longer. It seemed as if our time apart only served as to feed the fire that was constantly brewed between the two of us.
Clay stood up to his full height, and I almost gasped. It seemed as if he had gotten taller than the last time I had come across him, or maybe my body had started to shrink. My shoes are starting to fit a little loose.
He started walking towards me, a look of determination stretching across his taunt face. "Do you not love Riven?" he whispered, his breath fanning across my face and setting my cheeks aflame.
Oh no, this was just like my dream.
