Mae lives in our supposedly 'ordered' world - the world of pop stars, the world of celebrities embarrassing themselves on live television, the world of high-speed broadband and laptops with their own WiFi, the world of touch screen mobile phones, the world of sixth-generation iPod nanos. But Mae's world is a very different world from reality.
Living in a foster family of eight, and sharing a bedroom with three sisters, Mae is limited to what they can afford: which translates as no mobile phone, no laptop, and no iPod. In fact, when she reached her fifteenth birthday, Mae didn't expect to receive anything of any value whatsoever.
But of course, like usual, Mae's assumption is proven false with the arrival of the Demon Twins, Reese and Reagan, who claim to be her 'Paranormal Protectors'. With strange cat-like qualities and the promise of safety from unusual attackers, Mae is left to wonder why she has been chosen by two very 'unique', ubiquitous doppelgängers - and why she is supposedly being 'targeted' by mysterious creatures she struggles to see.
