Chapter Ten

James’ POV

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I was on my way home, it’s like I was on auto pilot and just drove here instead.   I knocked several times, a part of me was hoping that no one was home, but I knew that someone had to be home.  Sophia didn’t come into school today and when Isobel told me how sick she was the night before, my heart started to ache.  I knew that I just had to see her, see for myself how she was doing.  I called her cell on lunch but she didn’t pick up and that worried me even more.

I heard some footsteps now approaching the door and my palms started to get sweaty.  God...I hope it’s not her Dad or Nick for that matter.   The door slowly opened and one of the most beautiful women that I had ever seen stood in front of me.    She was definitely Sophia’s Mother for the resemblance was remarkable.    The same long chestnut coloured hair, long lean legs and green eyes so much like Isobel’s.

“Um......Mrs. Connelly?” I hesitantly asked her.  I wasn’t a hundred percent sure it was her, so I thought that I would ask first.

“Yes....that’s me,” she replied softly.  She was very soft spoken, just like Sophia’s voice.   Very soothing, very caring, I’m betting that Sophia is very much like her Mother.

“Hi......I’m ah......,” I was so nervous that I thrust out my hand.  “I’m James Anderson.”

Her eyes went wide now with a look of surprise but then she changed that pretty quickly and before I knew it, she was giving me an enormous smile.....so much like Sophia’s that it made my insides melt.

“James,” she said as she shook my hand.   “I’ve heard a lot about you, please come in.”  She stepped aside and I stepped into the familiar foyer that I was once in not long ago.   Everything still looked the same, I could hear the TV on in the next room, but the rest of the house was quiet.

“I’m sorry to disturb you,” I stuttered out.  God...I was so nervous, I needed to get a grip.  “Ah....Isobel said that Sophia wasn’t well last night....so I......” My tongue felt like cement...what the hell is wrong with me!  “I came to see how she was doing.”

Another brilliant smile I got...”This is very kind of you to come by James, I’m sure that Sophia will be happy to know that you are here,” Mrs. Connelly told me.   “Come in, she’s just in the family room.   She’s asleep though, but do stay for a bit.  She might wake up.”

“Okay,” I replied and followed her down the hall, through the kitchen, past a dining room and into the family room.   The room was huge.   A large sofa, a love seat and two side sofa chairs.   A large screen TV was place above the stone fireplace.  The room was very warm and inviting.  Sophia lay on her tummy, piled high with pillows on the large sofa.    A blanket was draped over her, one of her hands was hanging off the sofa.  She looked like sleeping beauty.
