Chapter 5

Rose watched as Steel walked away. She shrugged again and walked over to the other stall. “Well hello there thunder. This will only sting for a minute.” One by one she inserted the chip into each of the horses and checked to make sure the data went live.

She was feeling so accomplished and loving her job. Colt and the other men were very friendly and did their best to help her in whatever she needed. She was down to the last seven when she heard the angry bellow of her name. She looked up as her name was screamed again.

Her jaw dropped as she saw her uncle striding towards her followed by Steel. He smirked at her as Uncle Mike yanked her off of the fence. “Your father is going to want my head on a platter if you get sick young lady. Steel said he sent you to eat and instead, you worked and didn’t eat.” She looked over at Steel, still not believing he had snitched on her.

“Uncle Mike, I” he held his hand up not letting her explain a thing.

“Casey is waiting for us. Your work day is over. Steel, put her things back in her office and drive her car to the club house. Casey and I will see her home later.” He led her out of the barn by the arm.

Once in the car she glared at him. “I am not a little girl Uncle Mike.” That was beyond embarrassing. She was a grown woman, he was treating her the same way her father did. She felt the tears roll down her cheeks.

The moment they reached the house she ran out and smack into Hope. “I told dad he shouldn’t go get you while he was mad.” She said as she patted Rose on the back.

“You girls will be the death of me.” He said as he stomped into the house.

Casey had been standing by the window when all the commotion happened. When her husband stomped in, she went to him. “Your temper is going to chase that girl away Mike.” She rubbed his shoulders from behind as she kissed his spine. “Go cool off in the barn and I’ll try to smooth things over.”

He turned before she walked out. “10 more went missing. I’ve got too much on my plate and she’s not eating when she should. If she can’t remember to eat, will she be able to remember she shouldn’t leave or explore our property alone? It’s her life at stake now.” He looked around “maybe all of our lives, no telling what can happen.”

She nodded her understanding and left to make peace. As she expected, the girl was in tears. “Come eat, we can tear apart your insensitive uncle later.” Her words earned a watery smile and they all went in to eat. It wouldn’t take much to explain to Rose that Mike loved her like his own and just worried she would get sick.

After they ate Casey left the girls to catch up and went in search of her man. Oh how she loved the smell of a sweaty Mike. Plus, the girls were in the house and all the workers were down on the breeding barn. She made her way inside ever so slowly. She just wanted to see him off guard.

The sight that greeted her still had the power to burn her body. There stood her man in all his glory, shirtless. He lowered the water bottle and tossed it on the hay bale. It shocked her when he leaned on the wall. “Get your fill of all this?” he asked with a wicked grin.

“How did you know I was here?” The words were spoken in the breathy way she knows he likes.

“You make the air sizzle when you enter a room.” She blushed at his words and followed as his hand unbuckled his jeans. “The way I see it, we got about 20 minutes. You best be getting over here, cause if I chase you. You’re getting it hard and dirty.”

Casey felt her body throb with anticipation and took off.

Back in the house Hope and Rose were oblivious of the carnal pleasure taking place in the barn. They were busy making plans to go swing tomorrow.

“Did you really kiss him?” Hope asked after Rose had shared her story.

“Hell yes I did and I don’t regret it.”

The next day went so much better. Rose remembered to eat all her meals and another batch of horses were chipped. She was a little tired from staying up late talking with Percy but it was all worth it. Now she was just looking forward to going swimming later. Not even Steels sour mood would dampen her excitement.

Steel on the other hand was agitated as hell. The sleepless night he had just ramped up his anger. Truth be told, it was the call he unexpectedly received that threw him off kilter. He had only one bright spot to look forward to today.

He was so lost in his thoughts that he stiffened when his name was called. “Steel, you in there?” He muttered as once again the she-devil had infiltrated his locker-room.

“You can’t be in here.” That damn smile curled her lips again.

“You need to de-stress Steel. You’re always wound to tight.” She rocked on her heels as she gave him an open appraisal. “I for one am heading out to do just that.” Just like that, she walked out leaving him angry again.

What did she know about him? He had a right to be wound tight. Lucky for him, he was de-stressing today. He looked forward to Tuesday evenings thanks to Mike and his generosity, but that was none of her business.

He finished putting his things away and headed for his destination.
