“Jesse, Lucas is gone!” Anastasia shouted as she ran down the stairs, Claire slowly following behind. Jesse and Jonah quickly stood up, staring at Anastasia with wide eyes.
“What? How? Maybe he’s in one of the other rooms.” Jesse said, running his hand through his hair. Anastasia shook her head and bit her lip. Claire finally reached the bottom of the stairs, dragging Mrs. Cuppycake down the steps.
“There was a rope of blankets dangling from his window.” Claire said. Jesse pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes. Jonah put his hands on his hips and looked down at the ground. His point of coming here just escaped out the window, literally.
Lucas continued walking down the quiet and lowly populated streets of Oakvale, looking around and remembering where was what. It’s been a long time since he’s seen the outside world but not much has changed. His defenses have raised, as well as his paranoia. Lucas didn’t know where he was going, but he knew he was way more safe than at his house. Lucas fiddled with his cell phone in his pocket, turning it around in his hand. And if he ran into trouble, he could just call for help. His phone started to vibrate, shaking in his hand. He pulled it out and flipped it open.
It was a call from Keith. Lucas smiled, remembering the one friend that got away.
“Hey Keith.” Lucas smiled into the phone, continuing his random journey down the street. “He’s back again, I’m going to need your help again.”
“He’s back again? Well he came sooner than expected.” Keith chuckled. Lucas rolled his eyes. Couldn’t take this seriously even with a life on the line. “So, how’s your peter-pan syndrome?” Lucas shrugged, forgetting Keith couldn’t see it.
“It’s gotten better, but my family doesn’t know that. I still haven’t come up with a way to avoid him without getting raped again,” Lucas shuddered. “And then murdered.” Lucas couldn’t see but he could tell Keith was rolling his eyes.
“Well, we did it once, we can do it again. I can only pray you got better at math and timing.” Lucas laughed. Last time they almost didn’t away just because of one miscalculation that slowed Lucas down a little.
“Don’t worry, I haven’t been staying up most of the night for nothing.” Lucas ran his hand through his hair and sighed. Sleep was the last thing he ever needed. But it was key so he made sure to get enough. “Anyways, have you gotten better at your stealth Mr. Perfect Escape?” Lucas could tell Keith was blushing and was running his hand through his hair.
“Oh shut up, of course I have.” Keith chuckled. “But you need to get back to your house. What if he plans on using Claire to get to you?” Lucas slapped himself in the face. He may have gotten better at math but he didn’t get any better at thinking things out. “Lemme guess, you panicked and left the house without thinking it through, didn’t you?”
“In all fairness, there were two people around to make sure he didn’t get her.” Lucas sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He slapped himself harder than he thought. “And thinking things through is not really something you can practice.”
“True, true. Anyways, I bet the four-- four right?” Keith asked.
