We watched on the beach as the warm, glittering sun disappeared under the water. I stared at it intently, and I didn't take my eyes off of it until it had fully disappered from the horizon. I could feel Anna looking at me. I felt her hand wrap around mine, and the disappointment from the end of the sunset suddenly faded away. I had something as beautiful as the sun sitting right next to me.
Anna gave my hand one more squeeze before letting go, and reaching into her bag. She took out the questions packet Ms. Hart gave us. I raised an eyebrow.
"Well, we might as well." She replied. I chuckled and took the packet right out of her hands. She tried to reach back for it, but I held it behind my back.
"Give it back!" She laughed and yelled at the same time, "C'mon! Pleeeaaaasseee!"
"Hmm..." I pretended to think real hard, "I think you're gonna have to kiss me first."
She smiled and raised an eyebrow at me. I shrugged. She smirked and slowly leaned into me. The whole moment was gorgeous. Her and the lighting of the sky. She sat on my lap and wrapped her arms around my neck, and she kissed me slowly. I kissed her back, and just as it kind of sunk in, she pulled away.
"Can I have it back now?" She asked. I shook my head.
"You're never getting it back now..." I smirked as she giggled and quickly kissed me before getting of my lap.
"Oh, C'mon..." I said, still smiling. She got her things together, and put her messenger bag over her shoulder.
"Fine...fine..." I said, "But I don't want to use the packet full of generic questions. We have to come up with them on our own."
She smiled, and sat back down across from me.
"I like that idea." She said, "You first."
"Okay...hmm...what's your favorite color?" I asked.
"Oh. How original." She giggled. "Purple." I rolled my eyes.
"Purple is everyone's favorite color." She frowned at me.
"Okay. How about purple mountain majesty?" She said sarcastically.
"Now that's the type of answer I'm looking for!" I pointed, as she laughed even more. God, I loved her laugh. And I loved that I was the one making her laugh, "Your Turn!"
"Okay... Why did you bring me here?" She asked.
"I come up here every summer with my family. And in my opinion, it's the most peaceful place on earth. No sirens, no murder... unlike Chicago, you know. Nothing bad ever happens here."
Anna ran her hands through her hair, while her multicolored bracelets flowed in the wind. I think I just found my next question.
"What's with all the bracelets on your right hand?" I asked. Anna froze.
"Uh...friends gave them to me." Anna stuttered. She was definitely hiding something.
"Really, because Nora and Mallory don't wear those."
"Um...uh...other friends gave them to me..." She said while holding her right wrist with her left hand as if she were trying to protect it from me.
"Anna, c'mon just let me see." I reached for her wrist, but her left hand backhand slapped me in the face. It hurt like hell. She looked in shock down at her wrist.
"I-I'm so sorry...um...reflex." She said as tears started to fall from her eyes. I slowly took her wrist and moved the bracelets only to see scars. Scars that she had from cutting. She cried even harder, and I pulled her into a hug, and held her. We stayed like that for what seemed like hours, even though it was probably just minutes. This was the first moment in which I cared truly about someone other than me. I took her wrist and I kissed her scars, as she smiled at me.
"I-I haven't...in a while." She reassured.
"How long?" I asked quietly.
"Two weeks. It's the longest I've gone without...you know." She said. Two weeks? That seemed so short. But I guess it would seem incredibly long to her. I never thought that someone like Anna would do this. She always looked so happy, always smiling, always...Anna.
"So, why the bracelets?" I asked hesitantly, trying not to scare her off.
"I thought it was kind of a metaphor for who I was. Anger and sadness masked by happiness." Her voice got higher and softer.
"Do you have any markers?" I asked. She looked at me in confusion.
"Actually I do...why?"
I reached into her bag and took out the 8 colored markers box and removed the purple marker. I drew over her scars, and she smiled. I took all the other markers and continued to draw randomized patterns on her wrist.
"Promise me something, Anna?" I asked.
"What?" She said feeblely.
"Promise me that you won't hurt yourself again."
