The Firefly

Eva ran across the gravel path, the crunching noise lured her follower to her destination. She reached the nearest large tree and hid behind it. She held her breath as she heard the faint crunching noise of gravel coming closer and closer. How did I get myself into this mess? She thought.

"Eva!" Christo called out from his office. "Come here at once!"

Slight murmurs were heard from her co-workers as she made her way to her boss' office. She pushed the cold shiny steel door and it opened up to Christo standing up from his chair, both clenched fists leaning on the table.

"Yes, Sir?" Eva forced out.

There seemed to be anger flaring in his cold eyes. His top lip twitching in agitation. "Who the hell do you think you are?"

Automatically, Eva closed the door and stood staring at her boss, not sure what was going on. "I-I'm sorry, Sir?" She stammered.

"Do you not understand the concept of keeping your personal and work life separate?"

Then Eva remembered. It was on her previous case, she was meant to be hunting down an assassin who had been killing demons illegally and disposing of them. It was only allowed by the bounty hunters to do this job. Bounty hunters such as Eva.

After a month of searching and patience, she was able to catch the assassin but instead she had become the victim. The assassin happened to be a boy about her age, with dark black hair which matched hers and a pierced eyebrow, which also matched the one on her bottom lip.

The sight of his beauty mesmerised Eva and he was able to get away. She couldn't quite understand the feelings that had erupted inside her from his mere appearance. It was different. No, it was weird.

It was later learnt that the assassin was actually working for the higher authority and the local bounty hunters stepped away right that moment. After that, Eva had no more contracts that she could work on, instead she was put behind the desk and do the paperwork and research. It was a boring job and she hated every minute of it. She was more of an action girl.

It had only been a week later that she happened to bump into the assassin again. This time he was casually dressed and was at the local market picking up some food. He didn't recognise her at first, but she definitely did.

"Hey. I know you." She said, loud enough for him to hear.

The boy felt a bit agitated and seemed like he was going to make a run for it any minute. "You do?"

"Yeah, you're that assassin I was trying to catch. But then you got away. So is it true then? Are you working for the higher authority?"

His eyes widened. "Shh. You can't talk about things like that in public."

Eva leaned in close and turned her tone down. "Oh sorry." She whispered.

"How about we go somewhere private to talk?"

Eva nodded in agreement. At that time it seemed like a good idea, but now standing in Christo's office, it was more like regret.

"Eva?! Why are you shooting blank looks at me? Reply, damn woman!" Christo spat.

"Uhm, it seems that I don't." Eva knew it was better to give in than argue.

Christo sighed. He couldn't get angry at her if she actually admitted to her faults. After all she was the best bounty hunter they had. "Good. So you know what you've done wrong?"

"Yes, it won't happen again."

"Very well. That aside, I have a new contract for you." He picked up a file and handed it to Eva.
