Prologue

"Welcome to your new home." Our realtor, Jed, said while smiling brightly as he opened the door for my mother and I. I looked up at the large white house that towered over us and let out a heavy sigh. My mother shot me a hot glare, but within seconds it cooled to a sadness that pierced through my bitterness. I felt a small tingle of guilt that made me remember why we had to moved here in the first place. I put my hand within my mother's and gave it a small squeeze, to reassure her that I understood her pain.

Jed, who was standing in the doorway, turned and waved for us to follow him. I watched my mother as she stepped up the stairs and through the front door. 'It will be a long few weeks before we get settled,' I thought as I walked to the front hall.

"I hope you two will enjoy living in Cabot Harbor." He walked from the front entrance straight into the living room, and turned to a wall facing the west side that had a large glass window. "It has a wonderful view of the ocean, the city just miles away, and a wonderful neighborhood. This town is the perfect match." He slowly inched his way back to the front door where my mother and I still stood. "I know its not like California, but I wanted to make sure you ladies would have the perfect home." A slithery smile seemed to crawl across his wide face. It was something I learned to ignore after we arrived here in Prince Edward Island.

My mother, who didn't seem to notice anything strange with his behaviour, stepped forwards and shook his hand with a smile, "Thank you so much, Jed. You don't know how much this means to us, you've been a big help."

Her compliment made his confidence spread even wider than his smile, which showed off his many crooked teeth. "I'm glad to have been of assistance." He took one more look at the house, as though he was examining it. "But, I'd best be off. I have a client waiting for me in Charlottetown and I can't be late." I watched him as he opened the door. He looked back at me just as he began to step outside, the odd smile returned to his mouth and he gave me a wink, "Goodbye Claire."

Chapter 1. Falling

I walked along the beach kicking through the grains of sand that covered my bare toes with each step. Following the along with the wind, I looked out to the summer sky; it was nearing sunset and the warm colours painted in the distance reminded me of my old home. I closed my eyes and pictured where I used to venture, back when I climbed the rock mounds that towered over the green valleys, spreading far across the landscape. How I laid under the drooping willow trees in the thick, warm grass, soaking up the sun. It was a place I could go to think or solve my problems, read a book or sleep. There, I could shed every emotion that was wound up so tightly in my body. It was the one place where I could just be at peace.

Another gust of wind came, replacing my dreams with the sensation of mist being thrown over my face and the smell of salt. I opened my eyes and turned to look at my new home. It sat along a street of large houses that hung over grass ledge of the beach. It had been a week since my mother and I had moved in, and today I had finally decided to get out of the house to explore the area.

I continued to walk farther down the beach until I reached the forest that came out to the edge of the sandbar. The forest scaled up the cliffs that hugged the land and disappeared around a corner. At the edge of the forest was a small boardwalk which led to a trail that ascended the hills within it. I looked back at the sky and saw that the sun was getting lower and night was coming fast, but something inside me told me to keep walking. I carefully crossed over the broken boards and made my way into the darkness of the forest.

I couldn't help but keep my gaze fixed on all the tall trees surrounding me. Something about their shadows cascading down, and the way they moved with the wind. As if they were shadows of people crowding over me, making me feel insignificant and small.
