You are dragged to a movie you really don't want to see and the whole time you sincerly try to pay more attention to the film, really try to understand what's going on, the dynamics of the stick waving, the broom flying and the British Accents. Your best critique at the end? "So who's that bald guy with no nose?" Shame on you first of all for not knowing the most epic novel of all time (I might be biased just a smidge) but I understand, it has a bit of a slow start and seven novels that get fatter and fatter on an exponential scale can seem a little daunting. So if you need to know some Harry Potter, if you need to tell the difference between a Horcrux and a Thestral, Hogwarts and Durmstrang, Cedric Diggory and Edward Cullen (same actor way different character minus the sparkles) then this is the book to read. You can read all of it, or skip to the chapters you need, but between each info chapter, there will be a helpful -in a nutshell- chapter to tell you exactly what happened in language that you can understand.
But seriously....read the books.
