Chapter 16

“Wow Maria,” I beamed. “You look amazing."

Her reflection smiled at me as she looked at me through the mirror. “Thanks.”

My brother’s girlfriend was dressed in a baby pink dinner dress that reached just above her ankles. It was sleeveless, and because she had her hair up in a bun, it really showed off her great skin. She also had matching gloves on and it gave an authentic look to it, something only Maria could pull off without looking absolutely ridiculous.

Elena was on the bed, admiring Maria as well in her grey blouse and matching skirt. It was odd seeing Elena in a skirt that wasn’t denim or shredded but it really suited her. Not that I’d tell her that, she hated dressing up this way.

The three of us were getting ready for dinner while dad and Lee got downstairs ready. Keegan really wasn’t coming and I didn’t mind. Just wished dad had felt the same, he was beyond disappointed when I told him.

“You look pretty yourself.” Maria complimented, and I tried not to blush. The black dress I had on was above my knees and made of soft cotton, not the most elegant thing, but it was comfortable.

It wasn’t really a thing to be dressing up for, but Maria forced it on me and Elena and I kind of liked how I looked in heels and done up hair. Not my style and it definitely suited Maria better, but it was classy.

We were almost done when Lee yelled from downstairs. “Are you girls done yet? Sheesh, it’s not a wedding!”

Maria sighed, “Coming!”

Elena hopped off the bed and the three of us made our way downstairs.

It was really warm and toasty thanks to the great luminous fire in the fireplace and there was a smell of roast chicken in the air. Dad and Lee were setting up the dining table, the two of them dressed as usual; Dad in a loose fitting shirt and khakis while my brother in plain t-shirt and jeans. The green shirt said ‘got package’ across the chest.

How gentleman-like.

Dad smiled broadly at us. “You three look absolutely fantastic.”

“Thanks dad.” I mumbled. “The table looks great.”

“And something smells amazing.” Elena commented.

Maria was a fantastic cook and as always, she’d gone all out for the dinner.

“I’ll go see if the chicken’s ready.” Maria said, crossing the room. “Elena? Will you help?”

“Me?” Elena looked uncomfortable and shocked. “Are you sure?”

She nodded while Lee smirked. “It’s not brain surgery El.”

“So says a person who can’t make an omelette.” Maria scoffed.

Lee scoffed. “Can too.”

“Sure.” His girlfriend rolled her eyes. “After a thousand fires and a million failures.”

Lee was about to retort but Dad beat him to it.

“Lee, don’t bother,” he laughed. “You can’t win against her.”

Dan and Maria chuckled at the sulking Lee but my focus was on Elena.

She was frowning, but a deep scarlet covered her cheeks.

She didn’t like it when people called her El, she got even upset at me if I did that. I didn’t miss how she hadn’t said anything after Lee called her that.

I guess first crushes lasted.

Maria and a blushing Elena left the dining room leaving me with the men.

“So Meth really isn’t coming huh?” Dad asked for what felt like the millionth time.

“Sorry dad, I know that you wanted to meet him.”

Lee snorted and placed down a glass rather harshly on the white tablecloth. I was about to retort when my phone beeped in my hand.

I exited the dining room and opened the text in front of the fireplace. It was from Keegan.

Did your dinner start already?

I texted back a negative answer and the phone beeped again a second later. That was fast.

Any chance you could come outside?

I frowned at the words, confused. Go outside, like on a date with him?

But he knew I was having dinner at home. Unless… And then it hit me… no, it couldn’t be.

I dropped the phone onto the couch and rushed to the front door, yanking it open to step into the chilly evening air.

I thought I heard someone call me from behind but I was too shocked to reply as Keegan stood in front of the driveway, his phone in his hand.
