People Who Want to Sing With Me (Scraps from an abandoned play)

ANN leaves again. YOKO drinks some of the beer. SHE takes out her cell phone. She texts someone. ANN re-enters with more bags.

ANN Unpack some of your stuff.

YOKO Actually, can I talk to you for a minute?

ANN About what?

YOKO I don't know, I feel weird moving in here. It doesn't feel like a home. It feels like a place I can crash until something better comes along.

ANN It just feels that way because you haven't put any of your pictures on the wall yet. Everything just feels like an empty space until you unpack.

YOKO No, it's the layout. It looks like your house. It looks like the inside of all the houses around here. I hate that. It makes me feel like I'm in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

ANN What?

YOKO You remember that scene? When they're passing a town in their car. When they go on the fishing trip. They pass this town and all the people wear the same clothing and go to their identical houses. And the children sometimes go to the wrong houses at the end of the day and none of them can tell the difference. That's what this house feels like.

ANN That book was written from the point of view of a crazy person.

YOKO Doesn't mean it's not true.

ANN It means that you're reading too much into it. It's not a beautiful place to live, but it's stable. It won't fall down. It's built to hold people. It doesn't need to be symbolic.

YOKO Well it is.

ANN Alright.

YOKO It's not that I don't like it.

ANN You just don't feel special living in it.

YOKO I like when a house is individual. All of your memories are linked up to that house. It's yours. It's like when you eat Kraft instead of having baked mac and cheese. I enjoy both, but Kraft always tastes the same.

ANN I know the difference between machine-made and home-made. I went to art school too. We can't afford anything else right now.

YOKO Okay. When we get rich and famous we'll get a townhouse in the Village.

ANN I feel like we should be writing songs before this becomes one of our drawn-out fantasies.

YOKO Or maybe coming up with a name.

ANN The name should come last. We shouldn't be too quick about that.

YOKO Coming up with the name is the best part.

ANN I want it to be something important. I don't want to just name our band something like, "Sexual Harassment".

YOKO Laughs Sexual Harassment?

ANN You like that?

YOKO Let's use it.

ANN No! You're not listening! This needs to be something we come up with without trying. Let's come up with our sound first.

YOKO We don't even have the rest of the band yet.

ANN You have a few friends that aren't in bands right now, right?

YOKO Uh...yeah.

ANN Get some of them. We could form a little nuclear band. You know, bass, guitar, drums.

YOKO And then we'll live out our rock fantasies.

ANN I'm sure that's exactly how it's going to work.

YOKO It only works if you believe in it, Ann.

ANN Is it magic?

YOKO Rock 'n roll magic.
