Chapter 6
Clarity’s POV
Before, when I had contemplated the concept of dying, I had never imagined it to be so fast; or so pointless. I mean, really, where was the freaking pride? I could just see the headlines now: young, naïve girl dies falling from balcony. Okay, so maybe I wasn’t naïve but I was only seventeen, dang it. I was far too young to die. And yet, now it was happening. I was quickly spiraling to my death, the ground rushing up to meet me.
I screamed as I felt myself lurch forward, trying to grab onto something that wasn’t there. I felt the ground disappear from under my feet as I fell head first. Another scream passed my lips as I continued, feeling my stomach churn. Ugh, this is why I hated amusement parks. Well, this wasn’t really amusing but still. I closed my eyes, waiting for two things; I was waiting for my life to flash before my eyes, you know, the way it does in movies. I was also waiting for either unbelievable pain as I squashed to the ground or total blackness. Neither came, and I didn’t even get a replay of my life.
Another girl screamed just as I landed; what horrible timing. But, I wasn’t hurt. I might have a few bruises, but I was still alive. Also, why was the ground wrapping around me; and why on earth was it warm?! My eye lids fluttered open and I saw two dark green eyes staring down at me.
“Wow, are you okay?” he asked. I studied the rest of his face, not answering. Hm, strong chin and rough features. He was kinda cute.
Yeah, but he can’t hold a candle to Tristen. I swear, I almost groaned. Stupid voice! Now I was wishing I had died.
“Um, yeah I guess I am now.” I replied, giving him a grateful smile. His smile was much more dazzling. I realized he was still cradling me in his arms. “Oh, thank you for catching me. If you’ll just…” I was about to suggest he put me down when another voice boomed out.
“Clarity!” Tristen roared. I winced and looked over to see him running out the front door to me.
“Oh great.” I muttered under my breath. I looked back up to the guy holding me. “Think you could out run him?” I asked. He gave me an amused look.
“Back off, Kasey.” Tristen snarled as he ripped me out of his arms. I stumbled slightly, still unsure on my feet after just falling three stories. Tristen didn’t give Kasey time to reply or defend himself before pulling me roughly back to the house. I followed behind, scared of the anger I could feel coming off him. People stared as he pulled me through the house and up the stairs. I chose to ignore them.
He opened the same door as before I pushed me through, slamming the door closed behind him. I turned to face him, instantly backing up. His eyes were black once again and his teeth were clenched; how could I tell? Because he was practically barring them at me. Trust me, it was scary. I put my hands up, palms facing him as I backed up into a wall.
“Tristen let me explain…” I started but he interrupted once again.
“Explain what? That you were trying to get away again? Haven’t you learned your lesson?” he growled out, stalking forward. I glared at him.
“Yeah, I was trying to get away. That’s why Kasey was holding me.” I snorted and crossed my arms, rolling my eyes. He stopped, seeming surprised by the obvious. He seemed to be having an internal battle.
