Mr. Wesley nods in appreciation, “Good, good!”
I realize my mistake and feel like an idiot. I blush silently and back away from Eli, while still walking.
Eli notices my blush and steps closer to me. I look up at him to see him smiling at me which only makes me blush harder.
We enter the building and immediately the smell of pizza hits my nose and my stomach growls loudly. I press my hand to my stomach and I hear Eli laugh. I grin sheepishly and him and walk faster to a table.
There aren’t that many people here, except an older couple sitting quietly in a booth and some teenagers at a table.
Once I find a table at the corner, I sit down quickly and wait for Eli to sit as well. Once we’re both seated, a young waitress comes to our table cheerfully. She has blonde curls that would reach her shoulders if her hair was down. She had a pink t-shirt with the place’s logo on it and blue jeans. Over all, she was pretty.
“Hey Eli. I heard you were in today,” she smiles at him.
He grins back and glances at me. This is his chance to prove to me that he’s not a player, will he catch on? “Hi Jamie. Yeah, I’m taking Brooke here on one of my bets,” he tells the girl.
Good boy, I think.
She looks at me and smiles brightly. “Hey there. You better watch out, Eli and his bets are pretty dangerous,” he warns playfully.
I smile back at her and say, “Well I’m sure I can handle him.” I look at him and he winks at me. I feel the blood rush to my face but I try to keep it concealed.
Jamie smiles gladly and then pulls out her notepad and pen to take our orders. “What can I get you guys this evening?” she asks politely.
I turn to Eli, unsure of what was best to get here. He orders for me and then Jamie sets off to put it in. I then frown at him, “Aren’t you going to get something to eat?” I ask.
A look flashes in his blue eyes. I’m not sure what it was, but before I can decipher it, Eli covers it with a slight smile and says, “I’m not that hungry.”
I nod and let it go.
Soon enough, Jamie comes back with our drinks and one small, pepperoni pizza. She leaves with a smile and goes to check on the group of teenagers.
Eli looks at me expectantly. I smirk at him and pick up a slice. As soon as the pizza hits my tongue, waves of flavors fill my mouth. I moan unexpectedly as I chew. Eli chuckles at me and says, “Is it good?”
I nod happily.
The rest of the night goes by amazingly. I find myself not wanting to leave when I’ve finished off all of the pizza and coke. Though, we spent most of the night laughing and joking around. All in all, it was one of the best nights I’ve had in a while.
As we’re walking out, my phone rings. I answer in without looking at the caller ID.
“Brooke, how long does it take to get groceries for one night?!” I hear my brother’s voice on the other line.
I smack my forehead in stupidity. “Oh my . . . I’m sorry, Z! I kind of . . .” I glance at Eli who is giving me a weird look, “lost track of time. I’ll be back in a little while.”
“What have you been doing?” Zeke asks me.
“Um . . .” I trail off. “None of your business,” I snap.
Zeke is quiet for a moment. Then he gasps and says, “You’re with a guy!”
I blush and say, “That’s none of your business, Zeke!” We have reached the car by now and I get in the passenger’s side while Eli shuts my door for me. Then he goes around to his side and starts the engine.
He laughs on the other line, “Oh! It is a boy! I bet you we’re doing all kinds of naughty things before I interrupted. Oh wait, I don’t want to know. Wait ‘til dad finds out that you let us starve to go out with a guy!”
“I wasn’t and he will not! Because you aren’t going to tell him, right?” I say angrily.
I could see the smile plastered on his face, “Fine, B. But only because I’m leaving tomorrow and am the best big brother ever, right?”
My mood suddenly dampens when I remember that Zeke is leaving. Eli had gotten my mind off of everything for a while and Zeke just had to remind me, didn’t he? “I actually had forgotten about that, thanks for that pleasant reminder, Z,” I say sadly.
He stays silent for a minute. “Sorry, B. Just come home soon with food,” and with that, he hangs up, leaving me annoyed and sad at the same time.
