Chap 1
I squeezed in between two people, trying not to get my shoulder dislocated. There were so many people... how could I actually see the list? Ugh, I should've come earlier. Then I could've gotten a better roommate.
I squeezed out of the crowd, thinking it was hopeless. There was a huge ring around the list. THE list. The list of all available roommates. Yeah, in this school, you don't get random roommates. You get to choose. And that's why this school is so popular.
This school-St. Adam's-is my new school. I transferred here from my old one, because my parents moved away. I rebelled, but I guess after a while I just gave in. and now I was alone. All my friends were back in my old school, and though we talked on the phone, it just wasn't the same.
I rested my chin in my hands as I balanced my elbow on my knees. I should go and pick out a roommate, quick. I didn't want to be left with... a guy.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that. Here, even guys and girls room together. The biggest reason why St. Adam's so popular.
A bit ironic that the school is named after a saint, huh?
Go back and fight with the crowd? No way. I didn't want to die in there, thank you.
So I got up, and decided to go to the information desk. Yeah, weird. But I was gonna do it. What if I ended up being with some weird guy who thinks that chickens are gonna eat us in the future? No way. I walked over to the information desk, to maybe persuade the lady at the desk to give me a copy of the list of available roommates. Yeah, that would be good.
I walked out of the crowded hallway until I reached a less full one. At the end was a small room, with sofas and the information lady. The walls were glass and transparent, so I could see that she was alone, good. Hopefully no one else got the same idea as me.
I walked over to the room, and then stopped before I knocked on the door. I looked at my reflection in the glass. My hair was straight and blonde and was pretty long, and it was what I thought was my best feature. My lips were full, and my eyes were grey. i thought I was quite pretty, but not really outright gorgeous.
I slowly opened the door without knocking, and the lady at the desk looked up. "yes?" she asked.
"uh, hi," I said. "I'm Claire Jameson. Uh... I'm looking for a roommate."
"everyone in this school is," the lady said.
"yes, I know, but I really can't look at the list," I said. "it's really crowded, and I might get hurt."
"I'm sorry, but I can't go and give copies of the list to everyone," the lady said in a business-like tone. "you'll have to brave the crowd, miss Jameson."
I looked at her. What a bitch! But calling her names wouldn't help me. But I knew what would.
"Miss Jameson?" the lady looked up. "what's wrong? Why are you crying?"
"it's just..." I sobbed, "I'm all alone at this school, and no one will talk to me, and i... I just don't want to be alone anymore."
I saw the lady's face fill with pity. Man, she was making me feel bad. And yes, you guessed it, I'm an actress.
"oh, you poor thing," the lady said gently.
"I just really want a good roommate," I sobbed. "maybe make a friend... please, could you just?"
"of course, of course."
Oh, yeah. And who says knowing how to cry on command is useless?
I slowed down the tears, but made them not stop altogether. If you did that, then everyone would know you were faking. The lady started typing on the computer, and then called me over to look at the screen.
Whoa, there were quite a few people left. I looked at the lady. "who do YOU think I should pick?" I made my voice shy.
"well, I think you should go with Miss Wright," the lady said, rolling the page down until it reached near the end. I peered at the screen.
SAM WRIGHT
ASHLEY WRIGHT
"hmm... she has a brother?" I asked.
"yes," the lady replied. "twin brother; a nice young man. Well, I do think you should room with Miss Wright."
"oh, why?" I asked. Brother? As in cute brother?
"Miss Wright is a very nice girl," the lady said. "eighteen, very sweet, and quite smart. She is also rather popular, and she mixes with the right crowd."
