My canvas pumps pounded on the hot tarmac as I ran. The sun was covering me with tiny hot kisses as my heart thrummed with every step I took forward. I just had to get there, where he was and run into his arms so he could cradle me and tell me he was alright and we were safe.
I ran onto the main street and there was a pouring of traffic in both directions, I quickly got back onto the pavement and when there was a moment of clear on both sides I ran across the road ignoring the beeping of the cars that appeared from nowhere. I could see him vaguely, his silhouette I couldn’t see his features but I knew it was him, and he was looking side to side. I could imagine his face: eyes wide a look of horror. And I started crying, I hadn’t cried for a long time, they streamed down my face and I just stood there in the middle of the pavement letting them run whilst he was there on his own. I wiped them back and got into the beat of running again stretching my legs out as far as possible to shorten the distance. I dodged mothers with prams coming out of the nursery, shoved my way past old men with dogs. I just needed to get to him.
I ran and grabbed him by the arm and spun him around. It wasn't him. My legs gave way and I lay on the ground in front of the Harry lookalike. He knelt down in front of me. I got in a sitting position; the gang had turned away now. I got up and ran the long way home. Still through the alleyway.
Harry was gone.
Jordan was gone.
The gang was gone.
There was blood on the floor. I sat there with my knees under my chin and cried and cried and cried.
