Jamie

“Alex, I… “ Jamie stuttered.

“Yes…” Alex encouraged him to continue.

But Jamie never got to finish because another voice interrupted their little exchange. They both turned around to look and were shocked to see Derek standing there. Jamie turned to look at Alex and the happiness in her eyes could be seen from a mile away but it soon vanished and was replaced by coldness. Jamie turned towards Derek again and saw the source of the coldness, Tiffany.

He started getting up to leave because he had realised that Alex liked Derek. The way she looked at him, the way she talked to him, the way she talked about him, the way her back stiffened everytime his name was mentioned.You had to be blind to not notice the connection between Derek and her. He couldn’t stay here any longer. He couldn’t see his first love with someone else. Alex was his first love and would always be. He was getting up but as soon as he manged to he was pulled down. He looked at Alex he was holding his hand as if her life depended on it. She was in pain and she wanted him to stay here.

He sighed and sat down properly again. Even though he wanted to get out of here as fast as possible he would stay if Alex needed him. He would do anything to see her happy even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness.

Derek was watching this little exchange very closely. Feelings inside him errupted like never before as he saw Alex’s and Jamie’s hands interwined. He had never felt like this before didn’t what to say or do so he went with the thing he had come over here for to say. He decided to get it over with even though Alex looked in no need of comfort, he would give it.

“Hey, you okay?” Derek asked gently as if scared he might frighten her away.

“Yeah. I am fine.” Alex replied with as cold a voice as she could muster. The coldness must have been evident in her voice because everyone turned around to look at her with surprise written on their face.

Derek didn’t know what to say. “Well, okay… I was just worried.” He got out.

“Thanks. Anything else?” Alex said with the same blank expression on her face.

“N-No. That will be all.” He tried to smile but it looked more like a grimace and then turned around and walked away. Tiffany had stood there looking from one face to another. Just when Derek left, Tiffany glared at Alex then started fst walking behind him.

“Now, where were we?” said Alex with a smile on her face as if nothing had happened, as if this wasn’t affecting her. But Jamie knew her better than this.

“Alex, what’s really wrong?” He said. He was not letting this go until she told him exactly what was wrong. This time it was her turn to sigh. “Jamie, really, nothing is wrong. If there was something bugging me I would tell you. Don’t I always?” She said with a smirk. He laughed at that but he soon stopped once her heard her next words.

“You were answering my question, remember?” she looked at him, urging him to continue.

“Alex, I don’t think you want to know, trust me.” He said looking away. She turned his face towards her and said with as firm a voice as she could muster. “Tell me what you were going to say.”

He didn’t know how to get out of it. It’s not that he did not want to tell her, it was just that this is not how he had imagined it to be like. He wanted the moment to be perfect, but maybe this was it. Maybe this was as perfect as it was going to get for him.

“I… I love you.” He said.
