When Adam composed himself, he got up from the ground and pulled me up with him, wrapping me in a hug. “Thank you,” he said.
“Anytime,” I told him.
We headed down stairs, which was probably because he wanted to get out of the room. “Was Skylar really okay with me being here?” I asked him as we walked down the steps.
“Yeah. He—” Adam stopped himself.
“He what?” I asked, confused.
“Nothing.” He looked away, avoiding my eyes.
“It’s not nothing. Tell me, please,” I said, stepping closer to him. “Was it something he said?” Adam nodded. “Just tell me,” I whispered.
“I don’t want you to be upset. Can we please just have some time for us?”
“Okay.” I didn’t have the strength to fight with him. There was not need. If what he was going to say would upset me, why would I want to know?
He gave me a hug, “How are you feeling? Still tired?”
“A little tired, but a bit better.”
“What do you want to do?”
“Can we just watch T.V.?”
“Sure. Whatever you want,” Adam answered. He kissed my forehead and we walked to the living room. I sat down on the couch while Adam walked over to the TV and grabbed the remote off of the movie case next to it. He came back over to me and sat down, leaning against the back of the couch. He handed me the remote and gently pulled me back into his arms. “Put on what you want,” he said.
I flipped through the channels looking for the right one. When I found it, I put the remote on the arm of the couch and relaxed against Adam. “I love this show,” I told him.
“I know you do,” he said. I could hear the smile in his voice.
Images of NCIS flicked across the screen, but I processed none of it. It bugged me that I didn’t know what Skylar said. It’s my right to know…I didn’t want to argue with Adam though.
I felt Adam laugh and looked up to see my favorite episode on the screen. It was the one with McGee’s sister who supposedly killed someone. I couldn’t find what he laughed at, so I looked up at him. He was looking at me with a smile on his face. “What are you laughing at?” I asked, getting lost in his eyes.
“McGee’s sister said something funny.” He was looking deeply into my eyes. We leaned closer until our lips touched. He kissed me lightly, placing his hand on my cheek.
Someone walked in the front door, and we broke apart. Little foot steps pattered against the floor. “Uncle Adam!!” three little voices exclaimed, running into the room. I couldn’t remember their names, but I knew they were his nieces and nephew. Triplets. His other brother, the one I’ve never met, and his brother’s wife walked in, carrying a new born baby.
His brother looked surprised to see him. Adam stood up and walked over to his brother and gave him a hug. “Tyler, What are you doing here?”
“We came by to introduce Dad to the new baby,” his brother answered. Tyler handed him the little baby from his wife’s arms.
“She’s a doll,” Adam said, mesmerized by his little niece. I was forgotten about as Adam and his family obsessed over the baby.
“When did you decide to come home?” Tyler asked.
“Dad asked me to come home while Shannon was in the hospital,” Adam asked.
“It’s a long story, but she’s fine. She’s over on the couch.” Everyone looked at me. At once the three little ones ran over to me.
“Shannon!!” the all called, their faces lit up.
Adam, Tyler, and Tyler's wife walked over to the living room. I gave the three kids a hug. “Tessa, Tara, and Tyler, get off her right now,” Tyler’s wife scolded.
“They’re fine,” I told her.
“They’re my kids, I’ll decide what behavior is ‘fine’,” she said. I nodded and looked down at the ground.
“Hi, I’m Tyler and this is my wife Tanya,” Tyler said, holding his hand out for me to shake it.
I shook his hand. “H-hi, I-I’m Shannon,” I said shakily. “N-nice to m-meet you,” I told him. I got up from the couch and headed upstairs to where I remembered that Adam’s room was at. I walked in and sat down on his bed.
