I opened my eyes in a flash, I was capable of sight once again, but everything seemed tinted a silver hue, my mind growing restless. I felt the areas around my eyes, they were perfectly healed, as if I was not slashed across my face with a legendary lightning blade. There was a simple mirror on the stand beside my bed and a pair of ordinary dark sunglasses. I snatched the mirror and examined my face, most of my features were normal, but my eyes were astonishingly differently. My irises were shifting in countless colors, eyes that could easily hypnotize a person and make them watch the constantly changin colors for eternity, eyes that were identical to the one tattoed onto the underside of my wrist.
I examined the pair of sunglasses, wondering what purpose they could serve. That's right, I thought, I must not let anyone know of this gift. I placed the glasses gingerly on my face, wincing in pain, my body still straining from my injuries. I threw off the spotless hospital sheets and climbed out of the bed, running my fingers in my tangled, hopelessly dark hair, attempting to shake off the accumulated filth. I stumbled out of bed and practiced a clumsy walk, designed to trick someone into thinking I was still visually impaired.
It was agony to lie to Sasuke, but it had to be done, I couldn't let him stop me from saving the world, and I couldn't let Kakashi either. The two ninjas meant the world to me, and I wouldn't let them risk their lives to save my life, I knew I would have to complete this quest alone.
The pair of sunglasses slided down the bridge of my slightly perspiring nose, forcing me to quickly adjust back into place, hoping to disguise my peculiar eyes that would surely arise suspicion.
The sunshine was streaming through the glass window and the sparrows were chirping, filling the air with their merry tune. The grass was swaying in the breeze, the laughter of children echoing off the stone buildings.....
The door opened, interrupting my poetic thoughts, prompting me to speedily climb back into bed and act as the to-be-pitied ANBU squad captian.
I closed my eyes and leaned back onto the feather-light pillow, lifting the sheets back over my body and settling down comfortably.
A familiar hand laid itself on my forehead, a hand that I had ruffled my hair many, many times, "Hatake-sensei...."
"Hmm, Sana, you seem less tense, as if you're mind is at ease,"
I froze, not daring to believe it. Had Kakashi discovered my plan and that I had that life-changing vision?
"Which is good of course, because it's a sure sign that you're recovering!"
I let out a sigh of relief, mentally, after all, the famed Copy Cat was not an easy man to deceive.
"Someone else is here to see you..."
I heard a few hurried footsteps and a calming presence, "Sasuke-kun, you're here....'
He chuckled, despite the dramatic situation, and planted a light kiss on my forehead, his soft hair brushing my cheeks.
"Recover soon, Sana, and I promise I will hunt you down.....to go on an expedition to get Kakashi-sensei unobsessed with Icha Icha once and for all!'
I began to laugh hysterically, the subject of his sensei's strange passion was a source of amusement for the two of us, being that's how we met on....pleasant terms.
Kakashi, in mock anger, exclaimed, "Hey! I heard that! And anyway, not happening!"
The two left the hospital recovery room, laughing and chatting, as teacher and subordinate.
I felt a pang of guilt, it was difficult to lie to the pair, difficult to leave them, with the possibility of never returning.
I swallowed and forced those pessimistic thoughts out of my head, the chances of dying were remote, especially for someone like me, who is blessed with an extraordinary, but mysterious gift........
I have to do it, have to save my friends, the people I truly cared about. I have to do this......
"Shino, what's this?" I asked my Aburname Clan, insect-obsessed friend.
A miniscule jar, the size of a sewing thimble rested in his outstretched palm, two small insects scuttling in the bottom of the glass jar.
"Infant insects," Shino informed me, serious as usual, "They are commonly used as messengers, or spies, in our clan. There is a special jutsu, where you can take over the mind of one of the insects and control him or her. The jutsu is very taxing though, and it would be best to only use it on desperate measures."
