The Shadow Princess

Prim holds on to her boyfriend's hand, her finger nails digging into his skin, and screams for what seemed like the hundredth time.

“Breath. In and out, in and out.” Kieren tells her. His voice seeming to bounce off the plain, concrete walls.

“I am breathing!” she snapped and screamed again, the pain becoming unbearable.

She's scared, not for herself, but for her child, who coincidentally wasn't human. But then again, neither was she. Her name, her full name, was Primrose Scarlett Aisling, and she was the princess of the Shadow-realm, a place where the supernatural existed. Now she was about to give birth to an illegal child. A child who shouldn't even have been able to be conceived.

Her pitch rises one last time, then is replaced by crying. Prim smiles, it's her child's first breath.

The doctor brings the infant towards her, laying it gently in her arms. It's a girl. She's beautiful, anyone can see that. Thick, black hair sprouts from her scalp, framing a delicate, pale face. High cheekbones, pouty lips and amazing blue eyes decorate it.

The little girl cocks her head, and if babies could look confused this one did. Prim laughs, but it quickly turns into a sob. In an instant, the pain starts again, sharp, strong. She yells, her muscles convulse and she almost drops the infant. Doctors rush over to her, Kieren starts murmuring soothing words.

“They're twins.” one of the female doctors shouts, and it's true.

In a matter of seconds another baby girl is in her arms. Just as beautiful as the first. The thing that's different about this one, are her eyes. Heavy lashed, that's normal, widely dilated pupils, also normal. No, what's not normal are her irises.

They're violet, like her fathers, but shine brighter than anything they have ever seen before. The look in them has too much wisdom for a new born baby. The little girl smiles, as if it knows what her mother is thinking. Prim stares at her two girls, wondering what kind of life they'll have as hybrids. She doesn't want to lose them, but her own father was oblivious to the fact that she had been pregnant

kieren didn't think this would happen, no one did. It was impossible to have a child with another creature. In other words, a vampire and a witch could not mate.

“What are you going to name them.” kieren asked, a smile on his face.

She shrugged, “I don't know.”

“How about Seline,” he points to the blue eyed girl, then points at the smaller one “And, Catalina”

“That's lovely,” she says and suddenly the room starts to spin, her vision wavering.

No, not here not now. Then she plunged into the vision. People were everywhere, their faces angry. They surrounded two girls, sisters. Their expressions were ones of horror and fear.

Half breeds!” the people screamed.

Unnatural!”

Should have drowned at birth.”

The two sister huddled together, slowly backing away from the never ending crowd. With a jolt she realized who they were, her daughters.

Prim shook herself out of the vision, fear crawling into her eyes. She knew what she had to do.

“Raven, Ari” she croaked.

Two fair haired young women scrambled over each and took their little sister's hand. Prim lightly pushed her daughters into their hand, confusion crossing their faces.

“Take them away from her” she said

“What” they both screamed. She repeated her statement.

“Why” Raven asked

“They're illegal hybrids , you know what they do to hybrids.” prim said, her voice blunt lacking emotion. Her sisters nodded, seeing her logic.

“But where do we take them.”

“As far away from here as possible, now go and don't let anyone see you.”

She watched as her sisters nodded, then walked away, waving goodbye. Prim smiled, a sad smile, but still a smile.

“Goodbye, Seline. Goodbye Catalina.” she whispered. A single tear running down her cheek.
