Behind These Walls

THIS IS MY 2012 WATTYS ENTRY. I'LL LOVE YOU IF YOU VOTE(:

                What the hell is that?

I frowned, looking at the picture once again. Hudson had convinced me to play some stupid game on my iPhone with him that consisted drawing something and having your friend guess what it was. Hudson drew what looked like a person that was singing in front of an American flag. It was five letters long, and I kept scrambling the letters all in vain, as I still couldn't figure it out. "The fuck?" I muttered. "What is this...?"

                "Calista!"

I turned towards the source of the voice to see Melodie running towards me. "Hey," I said, making space on the bench so she could sit next to me. "What do you want?"

Melodie's face was literally glowing. She wore a big smile, so big that her eyes crinkled, but even then I could tell that her eyes were dancing. "Hel-lo, Calista!"

"What do you want?" I repeated. "Why are you so happy?"

Ignoring my question, Melodie asked, "What're you doing?"

I sighed. "Trying to figure out what this piece of crap is. I can't tell. Hudson is a terrible artist."

"Let me see that..." Melodie leaned over and studied what's on my phone. "Oh. Isn't it obvious? It's Obama."

                " No, it's not."

"Yeah, it is. It's five letters, right? O-B-A-M-A." As she spoke the letters, Melodie tapped the screen, clicking them. "See? I told you!"

I huffed. "Whatever. Why are you in such a good mood, anyway?"

                Melodie giggled.

                She giggled.

What on earth had happened to the tough, wacky, not-in-the-least-girly girl I'd known?

"What's wrong with you?" I said, then cringed slightly, as it came out much ruder than I'd intended.

It wasn't like it mattered, though, because the girl sitting next to me―the girl who looked like the Melodie Kim I'd gone to school with for years―was unrecognizable as she continued to giggle. "What are you talking about? Nothing's wrong with me."

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, okay. Whatever. Just, leave me alone..." Even though she didn't say it, I remembered that the reason she was all giggle-y and weird was because of John. They recently got together and were now officially boyfriend and girlfriend, or at least that was what I'd heard. I hadn't talked to either since the day before yesterday when I'd talked to John. "Go make out with your boyfriend or something."

Immediately, Melodie's eyes lit up. "I wanted to talk to you about that, by the way!"

                "What is it?"

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!" She gushed.

"Don't mention it." I really didn't want her to mention it. Something made me feel awkward inside, so I just said, "Seriously, it was no big deal. It was a lot better than waiting for you to never make a move, you dumbass."
