His Royal Pawn- Prologue

There he was: my prey. The man who would soon be begging for mercy. Unfortunately for him, he wouldn’t be receiving any. If only he knew.

My feet trod lightly on the ground beneath them without making a single sound. Only a minute or two remained until my victim would walk off the main road, and once he did, I would make my move.

Before me, the man walked cautiously through the dark streets, his eyes scanning the area frantically. Occasionally he would look over his shoulder, but he never saw me. I, for one, knew how to blend in.

After walking a few more blocks, he turned into a dark alley. I followed, but not for long.

There, in the very back, stood a tall metal fence preventing either one of us from going any further. What this criminal was doing down here, I didn’t know. Nevertheless, I knew he was here for a reason, and I was going to stop him.

With nowhere to go, the man froze by the fence--his back still turned toward me. His chin suddenly tilted to the side the moment I came to a stop, and a low chuckle slit through the silence like a knife.

“I know you’re there, princess,” he said. The English accent that charmed so many sent chills down my spine; he was not who he once was. “What I don’t know is how you found me.”

A crooked grin tugged the corners of my lips upward. “I have my ways.”

He turned to face me, his blue eyes gleaming evilly. “Keeping secrets, are you? Well, I have methods for getting those out.”

“Are you referring to your technique of torturing people before you kill them?”

A wicked smile contorted his once beautiful features. “Maybe, but I’m afraid it’s going to be bullets for you.”

On cue, he pulled a shining silver gun out of his coat pocket and pointed it at my head.

If he wanted me to be scared, he picked the wrong girl.

“Sorry. I’m not up to cowering before you.” I took a few steps closer, my hands clasped loosely behind my back. “It’s you who’ll be doing that.”

He paused a moment, but then his enchanting laughter rang through the air. “Are you serious? You think you can handle me?” A scoff escaped his lips. “You’re fragile in comparison.”

My feet took a few more measly steps forward, so that only a few feet separated us. “Are you sure about that?”

Ankles crossed, I clutched my hips tightly in the hope of maintaining my sinister attitude. It had the desired effect.

For a moment, the man seemed conflicted, but he snapped out of it quickly. A devilish expression took form on his face once again.

“You have no weapons, no defenses. I’m invincible. Do you really think you can win this by yourself?” He gripped his gun tighter.

I was just about to respond when a voice boomed out from behind me.

“She’s not alone,” it said, followed by the sound of incoming footsteps.

The blond criminal by the fence became almost frozen in place, his blue eyes widening in fear. “It’s you, isn’t it?”

A man appeared by my side. His steely blue eyes focused in on the other creature, with power emanating from his whole person.

“You’ve been expecting me, haven’t you?” He stepped slightly in front of me. “Well it’s about time we finished this.”

I moved out from behind him to take my place by his side. “I could have taken care of this perfectly well by myself, thanks.”

His didn’t even glance at me. “Too bad. I’m here now.”
