Hey, This is my One-Shot contest entry for knightsrachels story - Living With The Walker Boys.

Charles' POV of Living With The Walker Boys

Chapter 74

Being at the hospital brought out the distraught side of Zoe. I hated to see it. Of course, it hasn't been long since I came out of rehab to make a difference to Zoe's life, but even back then, I wouldn't want her to be upset for a single second. I thought it would be nice for her to see Spencer and Jack, and it was, for a short time. Until Jack went hay-wire. Again. I confess that I used to drink with him, but since returning from rehab and understanding that I needed to be my best for Zoe's sake and not go back to the way I used to be.

After being at the hospital for a very short time, Carson stuck his head out of the door, beckoning Zoe, Ethan and Cody over to him. I wanted to give them some space so let them be. Cody was the next to go into Mason's private room.

Chase ran up to Carson, and I saw them confer quietly for a couple of minutes, Chase looking at Carson pleadingly. He nodded and spoke again. I could tell from a distance that he was lying to spare Chase's feelings, but as he was still young, he didn't notice the obvious lie across Carson's face.

Minutes later, Cody reappeared with tear streaks down his pale face, making it go slightly smeary. Even from here, I could tell what Zoe said next.

She spoke to Ethan, and said “Go”. He said “You deserve to go in.”

Zoe replied with, “Ethan, he's your brother, go.” That's my Zoe, trying to put others before herself, even in her particular circumstances in this moment in time. Ethan looked reluctant but conformed anyway, entering the room with a concerned look upon his face.

By this time, Cody had sunk to the floor, his head in his hands, looking really worried. Zoe crouched down beside him, and due to them being a closer proximity to me, I could just about hear their conversation.

“Talk to me,” Zoe said sincerely.

“I can't.” Cody whispered. I instantly knew something considerably bad had happened to Mason for Cody to not being able to come out with it, even to Zoe.

“Cody,” Zoe persisted.

“What's going on?” Zoe questioned with a visibly concerned look on her beautiful face, as she swept a stray of her fire-truck red hair behind her left ear.

“They call it severe hypoglycemia. Its where his blood sugar drops too low for body function, and he falls unconscious. It's life-threatening.”

“But he's OK now though right?” Zoe said, with visible tears appearing on her face.

Cody sadly shook his head, his eyes filling up with unreleased tears.

“He's in a coma.”

Zoe's face fell dramatically, just as Cody put his head in his hands, his shoulders shaking with the uncontrollable sobs breaking his young body.

I debated with myself to go over and comfort Zoe, but since I couldn't do anything to help, I decided not to. I physically wanted to, but I didn't want to make this already difficult situation harder for anyone, least of all Zoe.

She got up and glanced at me out of the corner of her eye, and went to Mason's room window. She couldn't really see much, considering the blinds were mainly pulled down, but through the cracks of the blinds, she could see Mason laying on the bed, motionlessly, with the only reassurance that he was still alive was his chest rising up and then suddenly down, before repeating the process, and the fact that his heart monitor was beeping rhythmically.

Suddenly, Zoe's eyes went wide, and she bolted into Mason's room. I followed her to see the heart monitor beeping erratically, meaning his heart rate went up dramatically. Zoe reached over and rammed the call button into the wall, to alert the doctor that there was trouble.

Doctor Chen ran into the room, with a crash team just to be on the same side, and just as well she did, as Mason's heart monitor went dead, with a constant beep.

Doctor Chen ran forward, pulled open Mason's hospital gown, laying plastic orange gel sheets on it, like the ones you see on Casualty.

“Charge to 250!”

~~~~Shock~~~~
Beep Beep Beep Beep!
“Charge again to 250!”
~~~~Shock~~~~

“And we've got a pulse!”

Zoe visibly relaxed, so I pulled her into my arms and hugged her tight. She immediately hugged me back, before smiling against my shirt and pulling away to go and sit next to Mason holding his hand tightly, looking like she was wishing that he would wake up.

So.....There it is. In my opinion, not overly good, but let me know what you think, especially KnightsRachel, of course thats the one that matters!!
