Chapter 9

Alanna watched her students as she wandered between them; they were practising their dagger throws. The weeks had passed into another month since that first special reward. Her stomach had swelled with the growing lives within her. At four months she looked closer to a five month pregnant woman with a single child but she carried it well, and was looking forward to the birth in less than a months’ time. Susan was pleased with the progress and although concerned with their size after witnessing nine births she was a lot more confident of the twin’s survival even if they were considered small even for Da’Vaila infants.

The boys spent an hour a day learning a new technique for their dagger or practising their techniques before they went off swimming. Today she wanted to teach them something new.

“Okay stop,” Alanna called and everyone turned to her. “Now comes something more complicated, sometimes you need to keep the person alive and a dagger entering the body is dangerous. There is a way of throwing your dagger to knock the person out.”

Everyone watched as Alanna drew her dagger, with a quick flip she caught the blade and threw it, this time the handle thudded against the target, instead of the blade. “That would have knocked a person out or winded them enough for you to get control of them. Everyone go grab a practise dagger and start trying to hit the target with the handle not the blade.”

Nathan raced to the target and retrieved Alanna’s dagger and returned it to her before going and getting his practise dagger. Since his punishment months ago he had become a model student, as had several others from Falcon wing. It was now getting very hard to punish any of the boys; they simply knew what not to do and what to do to stay on the good sides of their masters.

Dominic had been surprised, this class was nothing like any of the others, they were calm, they obeyed their masters to the letter and they were hardly ever punished, but there was no doubt that what Alanna was doing was creating better stronger men.

“Alanna… please… sit.” Tarval told her as he placed a chair behind her.
