DEMTRI’S POV

I clenched my door handle tighter. I had my glasses in my bag and a hat over my messy hair, a jacket over my nondescript shirt. I was already to go and yet I suddenly wasn’t so sure.

I had texted Annie a short while ago asking her to meet me and she agreed.

I had no idea what would happen after tonight but I knew one way or another I had to tell her tonight. Maybe there would be some way I could still see her after I got married. Maybe I could try and talk to Arabella’s parents again. Maybe. Maybe.

I knew nothing except that those things probably were never going to happen. It was just a bunch of maybes.

One and a half months left. It was now or never.

I finally pushed the door open and strode through the hallways with my jaw clenched. I didn’t bother hiding or looking casual like I normally would. I was going out and nobody was going to stop me this time.

I walked through hallways and rooms in a daze.  It wasn’t until I reached the side door that someone finally asked what I was doing.

“Where do you think you’re going Demtri?” Cordelia asked gripping my arm surprisingly tight.

I turned to her, “Out.” Was all I said.

She raised her eyebrows, “Out? Demtri you know very well that you can’t ju-“

“I am not a child and you are not my mother.” I interrupted her, “I’m going out.”

Her grip on my arm loosened in shock and I used that to rip my arm from her grasp and stride out of the door letting it bang as it closed shut.

The wind bit at my face and I picked up speed until I was almost out of the castle grounds. Once I figured I was a safe distance from the castle I took off my hat and put on my glasses although the sun had already set.

I pulled the jacket closer around me and turned back to the castle. The tall towers cast their shadows across the law. In the day time it would look grand and extravagant but at the same time welcoming. But at night time it looked like an old haunted castle.

The lights in one of the rooms flickered and I turned my gaze to where I thought I saw it. In the farthest tower many stories up I saw a face staring back at me. I was too far away to see who it was but in the flickering light I could make out shoulder length dark hair and the plain outfit that would probably belong to a maid.

I could feel their eyes on me but I turned after one long moment and continued out of the castle.

The drive to the bar seemed longer than usual. I could tell the driver was getting impatient but I didn’t car. Before he even a chance to stop the car I threw some money over my seat and hopped out of my seat.
