Chapter 2

“Camden! Get back here!”

A smile plays on my lips as I click the door open, I can hear the sounds of a usual morning in the Hope’s household ringing in my ear. I can hear the clattering of pots and pans from the kitchen, the pattering of footsteps on the hard steps of the floor, everything seems almost normal.

Almost.

Kicking my shoes of, I step into the house fixing my sights on cleaning myself up and drying the drops of water that still stains the tips of my hair. I am sure I will need a change of clothing; not only is my current outfit completely inappropriate for the reaping, but it is damp and sticking close to my skin.

“Lana! You’re home!”

I smile at my Dad, stifling the grin the plays on my mouth. No doubt he has tried to get Camden ready now for a long time now, he is panting and I can hear the loud shriek downstairs.

“Hi dad” I say, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek, knowing that he will probably be asking me to help get Camden ready. I do need to get ready myself, but I know that I would help without hesitation because.... well I owe everything to my parents really.

“Lana sweetie what has happened to you? You’re soaked to the brim, you must be freezing!” my mum comes bustling into the hallways. She is already dressed and ready in a cream dress- prepared as always- and an apron is tied round her hip.

“I’m fine mum” I ensure her, not wanting her to panic more than she most likely is “I just bumped into Dallas and Morgan. We hung out at the beach and...... Well.....Dallas kind of started a water fight.....”

“Of course it would be him wouldn’t it?” dad murmurs, running his fingers through his brown hair before returning down the stairs in his attempt to catch Camden.

I smirk triumphantly.

“Well, then you’d better be getting ready, I’ve left you a dress on your bed and get cleaned up! We have to be leaving in about 45 minutes and you still have to eat so don’t take too long!”

And with that she hustles back into the kitchen, tying her long hair back up with a rubber band muttering words about ‘teens these days’ just like my dad.

My mum and dad seem like a match made in heaven in my opinion; even if they don’t look alike at all. Dad with his dark brown hair and mum with her honey blonde, but they couldn’t be more suited for each other. They both have the same opinions on a list of things and they both seem to complain when I come home soaking wet.

Let’s just say this isn’t the first time....

I scamper down the stairs back to my room, excited to see what mum has picked for me to wear considering I don’t own many fancy or smart dresses. I guess I’d never really had a high need for them other then the reaping.

Laid out neatly on the mattress is a dress I don’t seem to recognise at all though, I try to rack my brain but nothing comes to mind. The dress is simple- just a black button up with a piece of black silk tied around the waist- yet elegant at the same time. For a few moments I just marvel at it, running my fingers along the soft material, wondering what I did to deserve such a stunning piece of clothing.

“Do you like it?”

“Oh my....!” I cry out twisting around, all I see is my mother standing there staring at the dress, a distant look in her eyes. I can feel a blush nipping at my cheeks at my reaction, who else would it have been other then my mum?

“I-Its beautiful” I stammer “but, where did it come from?”

“It used to be mine, when I was your age” she comes and sits next to me on the bed where I am clutching the piece of clothing to my chest. “I wore it on the time of the first ever hunger games that day holds a lot of memories for me.....”
