Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep…. Much to my annoyance, I can hear the continuous beep that seems to be coming from right beside my ear. Each beep rings throughout my head, giving me a slight headache. I begin to open my mouth to ask someone to please turn off the unpleasant beeping, but instead a sharp pain shoots through my chest. A gasp escapes my lips, but is no more than a whisper.
“Grace? Honey are you awake?” A soothing voice sounds several feet away from me.
My eyes feel heavy like cement blocks, and I cannot open them. Instead I try to speak but am rewarded with a tightness in my throat. I can hear footsteps coming towards me.
“Grace? Can you hear me?” Their voice is filled with worry. “Parker, go get the doctor.”
Once again I hear feet shuffling quickly along the floor. I’m starting to worry myself. Why can’t I open my eyes? I don’t remember this happening before. A door opens and I hear unfamiliar voices.
“What seems to be the problem?” Their voice is low and smooth.
“I don’t know. She gasped and seemed to try to open her eyes but I can’t get her to respond to me! Is she going to be ok?” The sweet sounding voice is edges with concern and a hint of panic.
“Let me take a look at her.” The low voice says.
“Grace, this is Dr. Ingham. If you can hear me can you try to open your eyes?” Dr.Ingham asks me.
‘Why am I in a hospital?’ I wonder. With all of my might, I try to open my eyes. Nothing. ‘Come on Grace! Open your eyes. Its not that difficult! Just open them and you will be all good!’ I encourage myself. I try once again. Still nothing.
“Can you wiggle your toes or lift your arms or legs Grace?” He asks.
Trying something new, I begin focusing on moving a limb. My arms and legs feel like lead. Its odd they feel so heavy… what is wrong with me? Instead of giving up, I try to wiggle my toes. ‘Come on…Come on.. Come on!’ There! I moved them. It was just a little twitch but I moved them!
“Wait! Did you see that? Her toe twitched!” A voice exclaims.
“Ok Grace can you try that again?” Dr. Ingham asks again once more.
I focus all of my strength on moving that one little toe. After what seems like a century, I manage to move it once again.
“Look! She did it again!” The same voice from earlier says in excitement.
A murmur comes from someone but I can’t hear what they are saying.
“Grace can you try one more time?” Dr. Ingham asks, concern in his voice.
I try once more, but I feel so so tired. My body feels much more heavy, not that its possible. It feels as if all of my strength has left my body.
“Grace can you hear me?” A voice says quietly.
“Is she ok?” Another cries.
“Yes. I presume we wore her body out. She is still very weak. I need to take a look at her medical records, so in about 3 hours or so I would like to talk to you and your family. She is fine don’t…”
I didn’t get to hear the rest because I drifted off to sleep.
