It was aproaching my fourteenth birthday and I was scared for the ritual that was approaching. Only few survived and if I survived I would have to give up my siblings and be married off. I had not told anybody but Isaac and I had a plan. We were going to run away and live in the forest. I had heard about a town outside the forest that some adults wanted to leave for. The town may not have existed but we needed to escape Biconia.

Mai-lynn was turning ten and they already had plans to marry her off to one of the elders sons. He wastwenty-seven and already had three wives. My brothers were only eight, nine, and ten and the elders wanted marry them to girls that were currently five.

My ritual takes place in one week. The night we plan on leaving. Me and Isaac have been saving our food and water for three months. We should have enough to survive at least until we learn to hunt. Isaac already knows how to hunt but I'm not very good at it. We learnt in school till we were thirteen but then girls dropped out to prepare for the ritual.

The ritual was only performed on the girls when they turned fourteen and every two years after that. Only the people who were engaged to someone important lived. My father used to be an elder so I should live but I did not want to stay to find out. You see my father already had five wives when he passed. Two weeks after he passed his wives were called in to perform the ritual. Not one survived.

His wives were all of our mothers. Me and Mai-lynn had the same mother. Zach and John had the same mother. The baby and Josh also had the same mother.

The older you are, the more wives you have. No matter how many wives you have the first one is the most important. She is the one you've known your entire life. She is the one you grew up with.

Even if you grew up with her. It is still unusual for a case like ours to happen. By that I mean mine and Isaac's. We were best friends till he left school at fifteen, me at thirteen. He had to leave school to start work to provide for us.

I believe that this is wrong though. I think that people should choose who they marry, and girls should be able to attend school as long as boys.

My father seemed to think that I was a disobedient child because I played with my younger sibling and was late for school on days that I walked the boys to boys school first.

Tonight was going to be our trial escape. At midnight we planned on sneaking out. I should be heading to bed soon, but must check on the children first.

Walking into Kae-lynns bedroom, I heard Mai-lynn crying. Walking in there she said "Kara, I miss mom."

" Me too sweetie. Come on I'll stay in here until you fall asleep." I replied.

As she fell asleep, I left the room heading to my own bed and setting the alarm for midnight.
