Prologue: Shadows
A man quickly entered the shadows and slipped through the open doors of the night club. He could hear the men’s loud laughter and the sound of shattering glass from across the street. It was the perfect place for not being overheard and discovered.
Without getting his hood off he slowly crept in the shadows toward the door on the far side of the crowded, stinking room. The only object visible in the darkness were his piercing green eyes and the candles used for illumination, as he ducked the flying bear bottles that were thrown around.
As soon as he was through the door, two of the guards quickly blocked his way, showed him their right hands and rolled up their sleeves so he could see the perfectly mirrored scars. The man repeated the process and was quickly granted passage.
Once inside he was finally able to relax a little, but he was still lying on the wings of danger. He had agreed to be a part of the meeting that was about to begin. That was enough to get him killed.
“Come, my friend. We have a lot to discuss.” A voice that should have belonged to a snake sounded ahead of him, as he entered a room submerged in complete darkness in order to protect the identities of those who participated in the meeting.
“Our race has been oppressed and hunted for long enough. It is time to take matters into our own hands and end it!” He boomed, his voice loud and clear as the room fell silent. “I know each and every one of your names, but you do not know each other’s. And only once you swear the oath of loyalty to our cause will you be able to know them.”
“But what do you propose we do? You can’t expect us to join blindly; we need some information and guarantee.” A couple of other voices agreed and when the leader spoke again, his voice showed his agitation, “We have thought of a plan as to how we can… make sure our enemy is no longer in our way. Permanently.’’
Excited voices emitted in the darkness, some demanding to know more, others fearful and some agreeing.
“Silence. I need to know if I can trust you.” He made a dramatic pause. “You were all instructed as to how you would be granted entrance here, and it is your blood oath I’ll be asking again.”
They all quieted down, waiting for him to finish his speech.
“All of those who are ready to serve our goal are to follow my example.” He said.
A candle suddenly began to burn in the middle of the room, providing enough light to see other figures standing around it. A piece of paper sat near the candle.
“All those who shed blood on this paper will be bound by their word to aid our goal and mention it to others. For the price of betrayal is death.”
A hand appeared over the paper with the palm up, and with a quick move of a silver blade a long gash appeared on it. The man sighed in pain as the blood from his hand fell on the paper and gave a sizzling sound before blood-curdling vanishing.
Who’s next?’’
