Chapter Sixty-Three
-Shane’s P.O.V-
I shoved some cash into the taxi driver’s hands and hopped off the car. I walked into the building and had asked the policeman with a big beard for directions.
“I’m here to see Drew Lively.” I said.
“Ah, I see. Many have come. You a friend of his?”
“Yeah, you can say that.” I shrugged.
“Very well. C’mon, follow me.” Said Big Beard.
I had followed him further down the damp place until we’d reached Drew’s cell. Okay, first impression: scary.
“Thanks.” I muttered as Big Beard headed back to the office.
Drew must’ve heard my voice and turned around to face me. He looked stunned, yet surprised, and a little shocked. I guess he wasn’t expecting to see me standing right here.
“What are you doing here?” he asked in panic. Gosh, what ever happened to the strong defensive macho man Drew?
“Hey, relax. I just came here to talk.” I said casually.
“T-Talk? Are you out of your mind? I’m a criminal. You should stay away.” He said with a trembling voice. Why is he so afraid all of the sudden? Did the long period of being jailed give him amnesia? It’s like he’d forgotten who he is…unless this is who he is all along.
“Hey, dude, seriously, just chill.” I sat down to match his level. “I’m not going to eat you.”
Drew looked awful. His eyes look lifeless and it seems to me like he hadn’t been eating at all ever since he got here, and I bet he rarely bathe, too. His left eye is bruised. I think the policemen here are giving him a hard time.
“What do you want?” he asked like a homeless child which almost got the best out of me. Well, I’m not a heartless person, and I actually feel some sympathy towards him. It’s actually much worse than getting your bones broken. This is like mental abuse.
“I wanna talk, like normal.” I smiled slightly, relieved to see him calming down a bit.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Anything would be fine. I just thought I’d come see you for a bit.” I said honestly.
“Why? Why would you wanna see me? Are you here to laugh at me? Like how everyone else has? Or are you here to beat me up for revenge? Whatever it is, I’m ready to take it.” He breathed in.
“Nah, nothing like that.” I shifted slightly.
“So you’re seriously here just to talk? With me?” he brightened slightly.
“Yeah.”
“Oh.” His tensed expression had disappeared which had eased the atmosphere. I was worried that he might go insane and start banging his head against the wall.
“So, how are you?” I began.
“I’m…the same.” He sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“So am I.”
