Prologue:

Squinting out the rain splattered car window, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread in the pit of my stomach. It was probably nothing though. I wasn’t going to let some silly little inkling drag me down, not when everything is finally working out. Finally. Everything is good, and everyone is happy. My whole family are getting along, especially my dad and I for a change. We use to fight a lot, and I don’t know what changed, but now we get along amazingly. He always tells me that I’ll always be his princess and he’ll always be my king. My brother, Simon, is the prince and my mother is the queen.

We like to call ourselves the ‘Royal family’ as our last name is Royal, ironic right? But that’s always been our family thing. Simon can be a real gentleman, even though he can also be a real pain in the ass sometime. He's two years older than me so I guess it’s gotten better with age. He's always there to protect me when dad’s not.

My two best friends, Anna and Sarah, are also happy. Anna is happily still dating her boyfriend of just over a year now, Dean. Sarah has just gotten into a new relationship with a boy that she’s been crushing on for a while now, Joel. It makes me so happy to see them like this.

Speaking of boyfriends, that’s where I'm heading now. Noah and I have been dating for 5 months now I think it is. If you’d told me this a year ago I probably would have said that you’re crazy! I never thought I could spend so long with one person, or want to, at this age. But he just makes it so easy for me. Our parents have always thought that we would end up together. Noah will buy me little gifts every now and then just to remind me that he’s thinking of me, it’s the sweetest thing.

I’m going over to his house for the day but dad is giving me a lift there because he needs to use the car after. Now that it’s a new year, everything feels fresh. It was as if the rain is washing away the troubles of the past and preparing for the future, whatever it may be. The holidays are going so fast, but for once I don’t dread going back to school. I finished grade 11 last year doing alright in all my subjects so there’s nothing to not look forward to. Seeing everyone that I haven’t had the chance to catch up with over the holidays is going to be great.

Gazing out the car window into the heavy rain I remember why I love it so much. I find the rain so calming with its steady pitter pattering. “Violet, are you even listening to me?” my dad asks me from the driver’s seat snapping me out of my thoughts.

“Yeah, of course! You were saying something about... uhh...” I try to stall as I struggle to think back to what exactly he was talking about before I let my thoughts take over.

“Oh dear...” he says with a laugh, shaking his head, “I was telling you to be careful if you go out anywhere today, these roads can be treacherous when it’s raining as hard as it is today.” He continues, squinting his eyes to try and get a better look out of the windscreen with the wipers hammering at around 100km/h.

“I will, I will. You have no need to worry, you know Noah is a carful driver. We’ll be fine.” I say, shooting him a bright reassuring smile.

“Yes,I know, but I can’t help worrying about you princess. You’ve grown up so much in the last year! Soon you’ll be the Queen of the castle.”

“Am I sensing some jealousy there, father?” I say raising one eyebrow at him.

“What? No, of course not daughter!” he defends himself looking over at me and ruffling my hair with one of his hands. I quickly push it away before he can do too much damage to my hair that I spent good time working on this morning. I turned back to look out the windscreen a spit second before dad did, laughing at how stupid we both were together before I quickly sobered up and screamed.

“Dad, look out!” he quickly jerked the steering wheel sharply to the left, narrowly avoiding the man standing in the middle of crossing the road. Our car runs off the road and I can see dad out the corner of my eye trying to get the steering wheel under control, but I can tell it’s already too late.

We must have hit a massive rock or an old tree truck because the next thing I know, our car is turned upside down in the first roll. I scream out to dad again and try to grab a hold of whatever I can to try and help myself stay in my seat as we go for the second but when we land upside down in one last rotation my head slams into the side window with a sickening crack. When I open my eyes again my vision is clouded with black spots and I can feel wetness running down, or up I guess you could say, my face. It hurt.  It felt like my head was being pounded on by elephants. I try my hardest to call out to someone, anyone, the most I can utter out is a strangled gasp. The seat belt which was holding me tightly to my seat was disrupting my breathing.

All I can see is the man we swerved running towards the car with a phone to his ear. I can’t make our any of his features except that he has brown hair because of the blurriness my eyes were encountering. I faintly heard my dad call out my name before I was relieved of my pain and fell into a black abyss.
