CHAPTER 3

Rose and I didn't have anything to do till Friday and I wanted to take advantage of the freedom we had to look around California before I went back home. I changed into a short daisy dress with sleeves and my clear jelly sandals topped with a white fedora. Rose was wearing high waisted denim shorts, white tank top tucked in and white converse. We told the main camera man/director, Jono, where we going and soon we left. The mansion was near Long Beach on the coast so we were able to walk into the main town of the area and we found a cute coffee shop on the corner.

The shop was small, the walls painted navy blue with vintage music posters hung over it. Chandeliers hung from the ceiling and the window faced the sea.

Rose ordered a caramel thick shake while I got a Chai Frappe. Once the polite waitress came to us with our orders we chatted and got to know each other a bit better.

Rose was from New York City, a few hours away from Maine, and went to a co-ed public school like me. She was a passionate dancer who also loved to act as well. Rose was a hilarious character; sarcastic, witty but was also smart and caring and just a fun person to be around.

We were currently debating whether Justin Bieber's 'hotness' had either increased or decreased since he had gone crazy. The sound of the café bell rang signalling that someone had entered. I looked over and I was surprised to see Xavier walk inside. Honestly I would expect that someone like him would go to Starbucks. Little coffee shops seem too, let's say, 'innocent' for him and his bad boy persona.

I watched how he walked in, all high and mighty. His head held high with his green eyes shielded with reflecting aviators. He was dressed in olive green chinos, a white v-neck T-shirt with a dog tag necklace swinging around his neck. His feet were slipped into white canvas shoes and his left arm he held his aviator jacket and a leather wallet.

He walked up to the lady and I hear him order a paradise smoothie; lemonade with pineapple, strawberries, apples, pears, watermelon, blueberries, mango and banana all whipped together.

He catches my eye and when he recognises me he stares at me for a while, like he was examining me. I raise an eyebrow at him and he smirks looking amused. Rose distracts me, so I turn away, and we start discussing 'very important' details again and then we start making up plans to annoy the hell out of Lindsay. Out of the corner of my eye I see Xavier leave with his paradise smoothie again with his head held up high and his mouth held into a pout.

Stupid, egotistical, famous, rich boy.

Half an hour later Rose and I leave and walk along Long Beach enjoying the scenery. For the first time ever we watched the sun set over a beach as we lived in the east was never able to see it. It was an incredible sight, one which I took many photos of on my phone, and one that I definitely wouldn't forget.

Once the sun had set Rose was hungry again and we found a 7/11 store by the main road. Rose went off to find some food and a Slurpee while I just browsed through the magazine stands making a face when I see all the 'boy' magazines with half naked women on the front.

There at least five teenager magazines with Xavier on the front and then at least six more gossip magazines with him as well with headlines such as:

'California's bad boy out partying again!'

'Xavier Matthews: Another stoner?"

'Two points away from license gone.'

'Hollywood's heartbreaker shreds hearts again'

'Who is Xavier really dating?'

As I browsed through the magazines I see photos of him smoking, there was a collage of photos all on one page of him hooking up with different girls yet wearing the same outfit and looked drunk the whole time. There's a paparazzi shot of him walking through LA holding hands with one girl and then later that day he's holding hands with another.

I was honestly disgusted and also scared.

How could my thirteen year old sister like him? And the fact that he had such a young fan base and he did this stuff didn't set a good example for them.

Rose finds me and smirks at me when she sees me reading about Xavier. I defend myself saying that I needed to find out what this guy was like.

She gives me a pointed look and says, "The media is hardly ever right. You could be surprised."

I rolled my eyes surprised that she was defending him. But then again, Rose was incredibly unpredictable.

We made our way back to the mansion freaked out half the time. Note to self; never going walking late at night in California. Rose was carrying a bag full of junk food to eat in our caravan.

When we got there Lindsay gave us all a death glare as we entered and we tipped all the food out Lindsay gave us an even dirtier look which would send Miranda, from the Devil Wears Prada, running for the hills.

"Do you know how much sugar is in that?"

Rose rolled her eyes, "Do you know if you have any brain cells?

Lindsay flipped us the bird as we greedily ate our junk food and donuts from Crispy Crème.

That night I couldn't sleep as my mind kept flashing back to the magazine articles I had read earlier. The boy, who I had yelled at, at the introductions, did not seem like the boy at all in the magazines.

Something just didn't match up.
