My Life as a Walter Boy [Sequel to MLWTWB]

"So let me get this straight,” Sammy began as the limo pulled up to the sidewalk. “You were only dating Dana to make Jackie jealous?”

I shook my head. “No, we weren’t even dating. She was my fake girlfriend.”

Sammy let out a small laugh as she waited for the chauffeur to open the door. “Wow, I can’t believe they were all in on this. You guys are more devious than I gave you credit for.”

On the ride back to the apartment from the airport, I filled Sammy in on Mission Possible: Get Jackie Back.

“Devious didn’t get me anywhere,” I sighed as we stepped out onto the pavement. I craned my neck up to look at Jackie’s apartment building, unsure of whether I had made the right choice in coming back.

Pulling her sunglasses down over her eyes, Sammy answered. “That’s a no brainer. I knew you weren’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but that last plan was God-awful. What were you thinking, Cole?”

“Not helping Sammy.”

“Sorry, just pointing out the obvious,” she said.

We made our way over to the building’s entrance and the doorman smiled at us as we stepped inside. “You’re right,” I said as my rolling suitcase clicked across the tile. “I knew that it was a bad idea too, but I didn’t know what else to do. I just felt so desperate.”

Sammy punched the up button on the elevator. “I do agree that you are a pathetic, desperate loser, but that’s okay! You just have to remember that’s who Jackie fell in love with.”

“Hey!” I complained as the metal doors slid open. We both stepped inside.

The elevator music played softly around us, as Sammy continued to talk. “All I’m saying is that Jackie loved the romantic Cole that took her horseback riding, and the hero that brought her to the hospital when she burnt her arm. And even the sweet guy that flew all the way out to New York just to bring her back to Colorado.”

“I still can’t tell if that’s a compliment or insult,” I grumbled at her remembering the desperate loser part.

“Walter, my point is you have to stop trying to beat Kyle. You’ll never win that way. Instead, you just have to be the caring Cole that I know is somewhere deep, deep down inside of you. That’s what Jackie wants,” Sammy said. She crossed her arms and waited for my response.

It was way too late for that. Jackie already thought I was a class A prick. “And how exactly am I supposed to do that? If you haven’t noticed Jackie isn’t really in the talking mood.”

Sammy rolled her eyes. “Come on, Cole. You know her better than that. If Jackie has one major fault, it’s that she is way too forgiving. Just lay low for a while until she comes around. When she does just be your semi charming self and she will fall right back into your arms. No more of that sneaking around stuff. That’s my expertise, not yours.”

I stared at Sammy blankly. She always had to throw a jab in, didn’t she? “Are you this much of a bitch to everyone?” I asked.

She grinned at me. “It’s my middle name.”

It didn’t matter how much Sammy wanted to help me, she still annoyed me to no end. “So, you know that even if you help me, I’ll still hate you, right? After the whole sneak attack kissing thing back in Colorado I crossed you off my potential friends list.”

“And I will always love you for that,” Sammy said with a smirk.

I almost laughed at her answer. “So I guess we have a bit of a love, hate relationship don’t we?”

“Cole,” Sammy said and locked arms with me. “I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Back in the apartment, it smelt like something was burning.

“Hey guys!” Isaac called as we closed the front door. I dropped my luggage to the floor with a grunt; Sammy had refused to help me bring it back up.

“Isaac,” Sammy said as she made her way to the kitchen. “I hope you’re not trying to cook another one of those ‘make Jackie jealous with our fake girlfriend’ dinners.”
