Chapter Twenty-Six
Jamie
“I don’t know how you’re keeping together, Jamie…” Logan whispered, her hand gripping the mug tighter. “How you’ve handled this. With everything, you’ve kept it together so well.”
“So have you.” I sighed, leaning my elbow on the sofa’s arm as I propped my head on my hand. “We’re just going through obstacles in life. Everything is an obstacle, even if it isn’t difficult, or if it’s happiness it’s still not easy because it’s life. Friendships are obstacles, relationships, secrets, lies, happiness, memories and destruction. Everything is an obstacle we just have to keep going because if you stop, you fall, and then the next obstacle is to get up and keep going but you can’t stop until it ends. It’s a cycle that will be everything in your life.”
“Okay, is it your meds or vitamins or something that’s making you sound so deep right now?”
“No.” I chuckled, lightly, under my breath. “I’m just simply saying that no matter what happens we just have to get by and take every day as it comes hoping it’s not our last. Logan, I’m just trying to make sure that I get everything done.”
“And tomorrow?” Logan asked.
“Tomorrow,” I shrugged, “is just another day, you know?”
“So you’re not doing anything tomorrow?”
“Not really.” I replied vaguely.
“So you’re completely contradicting yourself there.” Logan said, sending me a flat look. “You’re not getting anything done.”
“No I’m spending the day with my family, Logan, I’m not wasting it. I’m just not doing anything special.”
“Right.” She said stiffly. “So you haven’t forgotten anything?”
“No. Why would I? I mean, I’m just having a quiet day in.”
“So what are you doing now then?” Logan asked, changing the subject. She had a frown spread across her face and was trying to hide it, but it wasn’t working. I tried not to smile. “Seen so you’re not staying here.”
“I’m going to walk to Mason’s house. He’s coming back to mine for the night—” Logan’s face fell. “—and then he’s leaving tomorrow morning so I can stay in with the family.”
“He didn’t stay back at his parents place for very long.”
“No. He was there for three days. But I’m not going to talk about that, you know, because I can see you’re picking a fight here. You’ve had too much wine and should stop with the popcorn and the intake of coffee. You’ve had three mugs and half a bottle of wine. You shouldn’t mix coffee with alcohol, it’ll make you sick.” I stood up and headed towards the door.
“I’m not picking a fight. I have my reasons to be upset right now.”
“Right.” My face fell. She had the right to be upset that I wasn’t well, that was for sure, and I know I’m running out of time but I can’t leave everyone to be with Logan all the time. “But just get on with Mason, okay? He’s trying his hardest to look out for you.”
“But I don’t see why he is now.” She grumbled. “Now we all know what’s wrong. If there was nothing wrong with you I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have anything to do with me.”
“That’s because he’s got me.”
“That doesn’t even make sense! He has you now just as much as he had you then.”
I bit my lip and frowned. “Okay, that came out wrong. What I’m saying is. He just had Jamie, the healthy, sporty girl. Now I’m ill and he knows that one day, soon, he’s going to lose me—”
“We both are—”
“Exactly. So, to help each other deal with things he wants to get to know you, be friends, so when the time comes, you can grieve together. I’ve had so many good memories with both of you that you just don’t understand how much you are going to need each other when I’m no longer there.”
“But you spend so much time with him.” She complained. I knew she’d been feeling like this for a while. Feeling left out because she was hurting about the fact my life would be cut short soon and I wasn’t always with her. But we’ve both grown up. We
